I admit it, I'm new to umpiring. Just last year September I took my first game as umpire and I was just promoted a few months ago to Head Umpire because of my knowledge of the game. But man, all these fine, diced rules. Fall ball starts up Aug 25 (and it is Fall) but I feel I have alot of reponsibility. The former HU (kind of a mentor) says it's easy. I'm expecting myself to do well, but when carrying 12 other guys? What's a good approach to take to this season? Should I be an instructor (and teach the umps) or just a coordinator?

One more question, I've figured out some of the abbreviations y'all use. If someone could list them though I'd appreciate it cause Im sure there's alot to use.

U1 - umpire1 (and such)
r1 - runner1
but what about f1? I seen that one used and was dumbfounded. Thanks so much in advance.

F1 would be Fielder 1, who is the pitcher. All fielders are assigned a number for scoring purposes.

F1 - Pitcher
F2 - Catcher
F3 - First
F4 - Second
F5 - Third
F6 - Short
F7 - Left
F8 - Center
F9 - Right

TOP - time of pitch
TOT - time of throw

R1 - runner on first base (1B)
R2 - runner on second base (2B)
R3 - runner on third base (3B)

B/R - Batter/Runner

PU - Plate umpire
UIC - Umpire-in-Chief
U1 - 1B umpire
U2 - 2B umpire
U3 - 3B umpire
U4 - LF umpire
U5 - RF umpire

WTH - Huh?

Thanks TriggerMN

I have a "WTH" for Mick! How can R1 be both the runner on 1st base AND on 3rd base?? I'm guessing you meant R3. :)

TriggerMN,

Multiple guess:

Which answers are incorrect:

I switched to softball.

I looked at the wrong key.

I hit the wrong key.

I saw twins on 1st and third

I kicked the call and the wrong key.

Thanks.
I'll fix it. ;)

I would say coordinate and help as best as you can. In the spring try to have a vet blue you know help conduct some classes and instruction to help you and them. Be certain of what you tell them as well as the coaches as it may bit you in the butt if you are wrong. Mean time study the rules hard and find a good mechanics book and study that.

I took over as coordinator with 3 years experience and luckily when we told the coaches summer ball is for fun, to help the players get ready for spring they took it to heart and as a result summer was chilled.. Now next spring will be totally different but at least I had a little bit of time to work with the kids that blue for me.
