This was a mess
Disclaimer: I'm a Braves fan and this was about as childish as I've seen adults act in quite a while (on both sides).
The play is what it is, and I don't have an issue with anything the umps did, specifically concerning counting Gomez's run even though he didn't touch home. Scoring the run made sense in a lot of ways as a fan. My only question - is there a rules basis for allowing Gomez's run to score even though he didn't touch home? Seems like McCain should have been ejected for blocking his path to the plate (i.e., because he didn't physically allow Gomez to score) along with Reed Johnson since he came into the scrum and pushed. You can award bases based on obstruction and if the obstruction is the proximate cause of the runner missing the base you can deem the runner to have touched it.

Look at all those fans dressed in blue plastic...yikes.

Don't have a ruling for OBR but NCAA adopted this in 2013
8-6 A.R. 4—If obstruction causes a runner to miss a base, the runner shall not be called out on appeal for missing the base. |
This is the same as if the fans pour onto the field. If the runner is unable to reach the plate due to outside forces, he will be considered to have touched the plate. I believe is covered in the MLBUM.
On the other side of this, Gomez is an a-hole for jawing. Just run your bases and let the score speak for itself. What a jackarse! |

Oh, great. The youth of America will see this and guess what WE will have to deal with next season?

If the Braves' sensibilities are so easily offended, perhaps they should watch, oh, every other Justin Upton home run. Or pretty much a home run every night. Then maybe that big baby McCann can stop getting all butthurt and stop being the self-appointed Baseball Police.

I'm not defending what McCann did, and I agree he should've gotten run. But he never laid a hand on Gomez. He simply blocked the base path and stood his ground when Gomez approached him. Yeah, he had a few choice words for him, but I never saw a push or chest bump or any other physical contact. And it was obvious Gomez had no desire to go touch home. He was looking for a fight. |

I still recall a game I played in my high school days Puerto Rico. We had a fight that included players wielding bats, and a couple of fans coming onto the field with machetes. I shit you not. Thank goodness there were a couple of undercover cops at the game that made their presence known pretty quickly, and they escorted us onto the bus to get the hell out of there. |

Maholm is an idiot for throwing that same pitch in the same location to a MLB hitter. 83 MPH in the middle of the plate. It's like saying, "Hit me out!"
The end of a long season for the Brew Crew. |
