NCAA CWS Indiana/OSU PU

I just realized I wasn't hearing things. The plate umpire is describing pitch locations on called balls. I thought that was an umpiring taboo. What's going on?

Norfolk V Indianapolis PU in AAA International League did the same thing tonight in Game 1.

It's not as taboo as it once was. I'll do it from time to time when it's borderline out or in. No big deal.

I do it, as do several of my partners. Didn't think this was a big deal anymore.

I occasionally say "bring it up down a little" or "bring it up a little" in the 1st inning to let everyone know what I'm looking for. After the 1st inning they're on their own.
I usually call a large enough strike zone that if it's a ball, it's pretty obvious which way he missed.

While I don't mind the occasional "Low" or "outside"... I really dislike "bring it up a little" - pitchers at this level are not always trying to throw strikes. Telling him to move it is coaching.

True for NCAA level ball. At Jr High or JV level, maybe not. I still work several lower level games.

Fair enough. I would still try to change this habit... what do they say? Officiate at the level to which you aspire.
