Not in this case, roscoe. This fielder was the exception specifically spelled out in the rule. The pitcher is the exception here.

How can the rule say he is the exception if you think he is not the exception?

Those damn replacement umpires........

Ok, I was seeing the exception for both. We got it wrong. They should have made that two different sentences.

It could also be interpreted as:

"The ball remains live if, before touching an umpire:

(1) It touches any fielder; or
(2) Passes any fielder (other than the pitcher)."

The word "and" makes it two conditions that have to be met; and the phrases "before touching any fielder" and "before passing any fielder except the pitcher" make it clear that each applies only to its specific clause.

Yeah, I think that would have helped. Re-reading it, though, it should not have taken this long to penetrate my skull.

I get that it is dead ball.

Why do you "get" that? It's not. It's nothing. Play on.

Send the runner back to third and place the batter on first is what we did. However, the NFHS book is not easy to navigate. I cannot find confirmation that I am right about this.
That would be because you are not right about this. You shouldn't have stopped play at all.
