At what point does common sense trump being OOO?
Why would the coach expect the umpire to tell him what to do. I would not say I "WANTED" them to bunt and step on the plate either... And if asked if that's what I wanted, I might have a similar response, although I'd likely be much vaguer, "Coach, I can't tell you what to do or how to handle this, I just call what I see."

But the coach surely could have done exactly what he asked about without permission from the umpire.

Yep -- suppose the umpire had said "yes" -- and then it gets reported as "the umpire told us to bunt and step on the plate". Imagine the uproar.

And the coach really does not understand what making a travesty of the game really is if his team is simply beating the crap out of the team legally. Otherwise giving up outs on purpose in any situation would make me happy (unless it is the bottom of the 7th or extra innings and we will be tied after that inning).

Peace
