Bending the rules

Had a situation the other night I would like to hear comments on. Pitcher's mound not kept up very well. Fairly deep hole in front of the center of the rubber. I let pitcher stand with his non pivot foot to the side of the rubber in the windup and the back portion of the pivot foot off the end of the rubber in the set. I know this is technically not a legal position but I allow it due to the hole in front of the rubber. Would you allow it? Any difference if opposing coach complains?
