Starting pitchers

Does anybody know if there is a requirement for mlb managers to notify anyone of their starting pitcher previous to delivering the line up card to the ump right before the game?

No.

It's a courtesy not a requirement.

Ok, now I'm curious. Why ask the question? Did a MLB manager recently put a different starting pitcher on his lineup card than what was announced in the press?

Starting pitchers are almost always revealed days in advance. It is rare that an announced starter gets scratched unless there are extenuating circumstances. It is rarer still that the starting pitcher is listed as "TBA" on the wires.

By rule, the first time a manager knows the opposing team's starting nine (ten with DH) is at the plate conference when the lineups are exchanged. There is no requirement that I'm aware of for the lineups to be revealed ahead of time. But, as ozzy points out, they always are as a courtesy.

Can you imagine the crapstorm that would happen at the plate if a different starting pitcher is listed on a MLB team's card? I'm sure the opposing manager/coach won't be too happy.

By the time he gets to the plate meeting he will have seen who is warming up.

And,

When the card is turned in it is under the "Earl Weaver" ruling.
