Umpire Intereference
Yankees/Rays today. Seventh inning, Yankees with 1R and 2R. 2R steals third, but catcher hits umpire's mask as he makes the throw. Runner is safe, but they send him back to second.
As a basketball guy, I thought that was interesting. |
One of two kinds of umpire interference. The ball is not dead immediately, and if the defense records an out on the throw the interference is ignored and the out stands. Otherwise, runners return because the defense was not afforded a proper opportunity to retire the runner.
And PU buys the first round. We don't like to have to call umpire interference. |
I saw the play on tv. The catcher moved back prior to the pitch and the PU did not adjust, so he was way too close to the catcher. The catcher raised up to throw and his throwing hand/arm hit the PU in the mask.

Here's the play, multiple replays, the rule, and some Yankee whining.

Whiny announcers. Too funny. Rita |
Yeah, we had the tv muted, so I missed the whining.
