OBS test
Over at Close Call Sports aka Umpire Ejection Fantasy League there were seven examples of OBS posted in this thread.
Close Call Sports: Rule 7.06: Obstruction, What a Pickle! The test is to determine which are type A, type B, and place runners. I have some questions on the plays and if some of them are even truly OBS. I'm using it as a learning tool, and would like to hear what others think about the videos. If anyone cares, my comments are posted under jdbr78 and I wouldn't mind knowing if I am wrong. |
Check Video 3 and 6?
Ruling 3 none. Incidental contact, possible tag out by F3? No way. I like the safe call, and obstruction, type A should have been the correct ruling because Pagan was tripped prior to reaching 1B.
Video 4 would not load. Video 5 is a MLB collision. Video 6 is a MLB oddity, but not obstruction. Check your comment about BR, difficult to accept that ruling. Video 7 looks odd but acceptable by MLB standards. |
Video 3 is nothing. Runner was tripped unintentionally while play was being made on him. It is definately not Type A
|
Video 5: Nothing in OBR. Obstruction in Fed. Delayed dead ball and I'd say award the BR first.
Video 7: Don't think I'd have obstruction here since R3 went well out of his way to initiate contact IMO. |
Video 7; watch the runner's head, especially in the replay from the left field camera. The runner watches the catcher the whole time and as soon as the runner sees the throw, the runner hurls himself at the catcher. Guy could be a punter given his acting prowess.
Given that however, I can see it being a tough sell to the the OC that his runner initiated the contact in order to get an obstruction call. |
OBS is apparently liberally interpreted by MLB umpires as most of these are not from what I see.
