You gotta ask for help don't ya?

The base umpire clearly gets blocked out by Gonzalez. Don't you think he should have asked for help from the plate ump?

Welpe Thu Apr 26, 2012 09:43am

Nope. He had that called and made it confidently. I agree with his call also despite what the ignorant common-taters think.

No.

The correct answer is yes.

Yes - I don't believe he should have asked for help.

He was not blocked by F3 - he had a far better angle and distance than PU. (Nevermind that he missed the call imho) - PU's opinion would not be worth more than BU's here.

You have no way of knowing whether or not Barksdale's view was blocked.

His call, no help needed.

Rich Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:49am

Until I can see a view from directly on top of the base, there's no way of saying the call was missed, either.

Looks like it caught the corner of the bag.

Pause it where it hits the line. It might hit an eighth of an inch of chalk - about a foot from the bag. then draw a mental line from there to where you see it caught. No chance does that line (even given the width of the ball) touches the plate. None.

OTOH - BU's view of this is VASTLY superior to anything any other umpire could have told him.

Why would you draw a line, when the ball followed an arc? It's foul for me.

Really? Did you look at the video? Pause it a 1:13, and tell me he wasn't blocked.....I agree with it being his call, but he botched it. Not and easy call.

Vertically, yes, but it's vertical path is completely irrelevant. Over this very short distance the amount of arc on its horizontal path is exceedingly minimal (nevermind that the arc is in the opposite direction it would need to go to make the point you're trying to make relevant - don't believe me, spin a ball horizontally as much as you like, and observe the direction and magnitude of it's spin after a bounce --- oo, look --- not what you expected.)

Very much not an easy call, I agree. But no one else can make it for him, and asking for help as the OP wanted would have been anti-helpful.

dileonardoja Thu Apr 26, 2012 04:36pm

No one will ever know if it is fair or foul from that video. Barksdale is in the best position to make the call and he made it. The end.

Regarding the commentators; IDIOTS! "the ball never landed in fair territory". That after they mentioned it hit the chalk!

Like it even matters!

jicecone Thu Apr 26, 2012 05:05pm

1500 miles away and I can even see it was a fair ball. No you don't ask for help. No he wasn't blocked and no it wasn't foul.

Any more questions?
