Did he go?

Philip Humber of the White Sox has just pitched a perfect game. The last out was 3-2 count pitch that the umpire claimed Ryan offered at.

Without the view of a better angle on replay, I'd say, "No, he didn't go."

You make the call. (when somebody posts a link at least)

Inconclusive from this replay.

The PU was very conclusive on the call and he had the best viewpoint.

Why anyone would want to question this is beyond me.

SanDiegoSteve Sat Apr 21, 2012 07:35pm

It looked like he offered at it to me. Too close to ruin a perfecto over. Really, why would anybody question this call? I know it's not a criteria in OBR, but the bat went past the plate.

DG Sat Apr 21, 2012 08:18pm

I read a study once where hundreds of major league attempts to check swing were studied with slo-mo and it was like 90% were deemed to be swings.

If I am PU on any game where the pitcher has a perfect game going and the 3rd strike on the last out is an attempt, there is a better than 90% chance I am going to call it a strike.

I also noted that the batter did not like the call, and had words about it. His teammates should drag him into a cold shower and teach him some class.

tmagan Sat Apr 21, 2012 08:19pm

I've seen lesser swings called strikes.

jwwashburn Sat Apr 21, 2012 08:57pm

I agree. I would not and am not questioning it. The only way I would is if the replay showed that he clearly did not offer...the replay does not show that.

Perfecto.

Perfecto.

The PU does not get to review replay. If I saw the same thing I am calling a swing.

I was shown this screenshot and it looks like an offer to hit the pitch.

David B Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:35pm

great job

what a great call by the PU - Joyce I believe it was.

Emphatic, made it right away - great mechanics especially on such a big game pitch.

Thanks
David

Excellent call by the PU! The fun, the excitement, the Man Of The Hour!

Now, that's entertainment! :D

Bizarre fact: Three of the four umpires on the crew have now been behind the plate for a perfect game. The other, the home plate umpire in the Armando Galarraga game.

Steven Tyler Sun Apr 22, 2012 12:26am

I just saw it in live time. Just the typical shot from the center field camera. The only replay they gave was the same shot. Hard to see the black of the bat in the catcher's chest protector.

It was Brian Runge.

Great shot. I take back what I said about the batter earlier. After the game he would not comment to the press, giving the moment back to the pitcher. So maybe he did have some class, even if he initially complained. I still think that was not appropriate, though.

The Batter acted like a crass child who should be lectured with the utmost sharpness by his Manager. How dare he throw a tantrum when he clearly played the arseclown on the final pitch.

DG, do not let him off so easily. I, in a way, am ashamed of you. :(

Blues keeping my M's down now for nearly 35 years, just another dagger..and late inning rally stolen.......did we all forget "two out's. so what?Okay made ya look.

Nah, blue thinks ya went, guess what? Ya went.
I think the kid really believed that was ball 4.

Blue shoulda waited for the appeal though,, been a great one to throw a pard under the bus.
Hey, just history on the line. Did he go?

In the still, I wish we could see blues eyes, does he give up on that pitch and stay with the batter? Or follow the ball what 3' outside and in the dirt? I know watching the replay in full speed I followed the ball.

Mechanically speaking blue must have some pretty good peripheral, and should probably do this for a living. Seems it shoula/coulda skewed his angle of the bat?

But hey, it's a PERFECTO.. Those other 26 outs had a lot more to do with it than "this one."

yawetag Mon Apr 23, 2012 12:45am

In this situation, the batter has two options: (1) Keep the bat on your shoulders; (2) Get caught swinging. He chose the latter.

Every time I watch the replay, he offers at the pitch. Never changes. As Mark Grant would say, "If he hits it it's a double."

Who is this "blue" you keep referring to? A dog?
