Situation: Runners on 2nd and 3rd, 1 out. Infield plays at edge of grass {to hold runners}. Ball hit towards SS, moves to left 3 steps misses ball. The ball behind the SS hits the runners foot who is going from 2nd to 3rd.

Runner who was on 3rd scores. What is the correct call on the runner who was hit by the batted ball?

Umpire ruled that since the ball was past the fielder, runner hit by a batted ball is not out. IF true, please give rule.
