Question

what's the call?

Happened in a game I was observing and I drew a blank.

Can someone assist - NF, NCAA, Little league?

Thanks!

Fed and OBR: If the batted ball is fair, the runner is out.

I assume NCAA is the same; it was when I played. I don't know LL rules, but I'll bet they are also the same.

In softball, the base is a sanctuary.

Wink

thanks, greymule!

appreciate your response!

But, on how has R3 done wrong? He has not committed any wrong doing and yet he is declared out? In what sense has he deceived the defense?

Didn't we just go through this thread over the last few days including today? No change if the runner is on 2nd or 3rd.

What deception got to do with anything? This isn't a balk. The runner interfered with a batted ball.

Runner is "guilty" of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Baseball rule 8-4-2k....and case book 8-4-2j in the NF books.
You'd be surprised how many coaches, players, fans, and umpires get this one wrong.

No out on foul, infield fly call, etc.

R3 would not be out if the ball that struck him while he was on the base (a) was not a fair ball, (b) was not in fair territory when it hit him, (c) was an infield fly, or (d) had touched or passed an infielder before striking the runner. OBR Rule 7.08(f).
