Hey guys. I'm a coach and not real up to date on the rules obviously...figure I'll leave it to the ump. So you guys would be the ones to answer this for me.

1-1 count and the kid swings and it hits his hand. The call from the plat ump was HBP but the fielding ump argues it was a foul ball ecause he swung...what's the right call?

They are both wrong. It is a STRIKE (ball is dead because it hit batter). New count is 1-2.

Let's hope that the field ump knew the PU called the ball off the hands and in a private conversation let his partner know he felt the correct rule interpretation was different.

Same thing happened today.

I was on the bases, and a kid swung and the ball hit his hands. My partner called it dead and awarded batter 1st stating he was HBP.

I didn't say a word. Turned and went to V. lol

A SWING and HBP is a STRIKE. It is simple and straight-forward There is no gray area here. Why would you choose NOT to appoach your partner (quietly and with respect), remind him of the correct RULING (not judgment, here) so he can fix it?

If he wanted to keep a batter at bat after bunting foul for a 3rd strike,
would you just stay in the field and not "remind" him that batter is OUT?

He actually happened to be my clinician! lol

I think he may have thought it was one of those half swings that a batter tries to protect themselves with. The pitch was heading at the batter and he tried to avoid but swung out of instinct. I really don't think he saw the full swing. I was about to go to him and let him know what I saw, but just as I was, the opposing teams Coach started on him. After the third "but he swung Blue", he barked back with "I said he was hit and that's all too it"!

So I let it go.
