San Diego Steve (Steve Meyers)

Please keep Steve and his family in your thoughts today, brothers. He's having surgery to remove his tonsils, which are cancerous, and the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes. He sent me a message yesterday and seemed pretty distressed over the ordeal. Steve has a bad heart and is scheduled for an aortic valve replacement in November. His heart condition makes this a high risk surgery. When he wakes up and feels up to looking at the forums again, a few kind words from his friends here would go a long way in helping him to recover. We go back and forth here over umpiring issues, and sometimes forget that we actually share a bond more common than that of umpiring baseball.

Thanks, guys,

Tim.

Thank you Tim, and everyone on this forum for all the prayer and well-wishes! I am leaving for the hospital in about an hour, and thought I would just check out the forum one more time before I left. I did not expect this! It's very nice of everyone to think of me. I have a lot of people in my corner, and it's really great to know that you guys are too! Thanks again. I'll post as soon as I can, hopefully tonight!

Steve

REFANDUMP Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:45am

Steve, as one who fights the battle of the bulge. I have great admiration for what you've accomplished. I don't know you personally, but as a fellow umpire I want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you.

KJUmp Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:48am

Steve, Thoughts and prayers are with you. Hang in there.

Rich Ives Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:08pm

Steve - get well soon.

dash_riprock Thu Oct 13, 2011 01:53pm

Good luck Steve. Hope all goes well and you are back at everything you wish to do very soon.

kylejt Thu Oct 13, 2011 04:40pm

Don't suck.

A buddy of mine had the same valve replacement, and was back on the field in no time. Hope things go as smoothly for you.

(Before my friend went under, he tapped the doc on the chest, and repeated the above phrase)

SanDiegoSteve Thu Oct 13, 2011 09:53pm

Hello everyone!

The doctor definitely did NOT suck today!!!

I just got home from the hospital. I went into the O.R. at 2:21 PM, and woke up at 4:15 PM. They were running late, and I was #3 on the list for the day. Despite the high-risk surgery, the doctors told me my heart came through it really well!!! That is great news for when my aortic valve has to be replaced in the near future.

The doctor (who I have known for about 8 years, great guy...Dr. Brian Weeks), removed both tonsils and a polyp on my voice box. The cancer was not on the tonsils or the base of my tongue, but on the voice box itself, and it spread to first the left lymph node, and now is starting in the right lymph node. Dr. Weeks believes I WILL NOT need chemo, but probably radiation only!! That would be great news!!

Dr. Weeks has always known that I umpire baseball, and always wants to talk baseball with me, and we were watching the Tigers/Rangers game together for a bit while I was waiting to go to surgery. It was 2-1 Tigers when they wheeled me to the O.R. Dr. Weeks is a fairly young doctor, 30-something, and knows the game of baseball pretty well! He also is one of the top-rated ENT doctors in the state, so I'm in good hands.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes!!!

And thanks to God, The Great Physician, for all His goodness!!!

Bob James Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:45pm

Deo Gratias!

Our prayers have been answered. I pray the lymph node involvement is containable. God is great!

And good on you, Steve, for being that one leper. Steve will know what I mean.

Mrumpiresir Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:00am

As a "brother in blue" I hope you get well soon and get back on the diamond.
Best Wishes.

Keep the ice cream coming. We're right there with you.

JJ

SanDiegoSteve Fri Oct 14, 2011 01:52pm

You would think so...

I was this close to getting ice cream, when my wife found out on a website that ice cream causes phlegm, so now I just get sherbet and non-dairy frozen treats. But lots and lots of these!

LilLeaguer Fri Oct 14, 2011 04:08pm

Best wishes

Then look forward to the day when you can have ice cream again!

Here's to a speedy recovery, and just as successful outcomes in your future procedures.

Glad everything went well Steve. Always in our thoughts...welcome back! Keep fighting the fight!!!

Texas Aggie Sun Oct 16, 2011 10:43pm

Tonsils are not an easy surgery for an adult -- or at least, weren't in 2 cases of friends around a decade or so ago. Perhaps they've improved and the fact that you seem to be in a good mood and do seem to be absolutely miserable is really good!

Good news and great wishes for a speedy recovery. Can they remove the lymp node in question?

SanDiegoSteve Mon Oct 17, 2011 01:50am

Thanks everyone! I am still quite miserable, but getting better every day.

No, the lymph node cannot be removed without disfiguring my face. The c-word has actually spread to both sides of my neck, in both lymph nodes. They got the polyp on the vocal cord, which has been determined to be the source of the problem.

The doctors said that I should only require radiation treatments, and no chemo. I will find out when I see the doctor who operated (my old buddy, Dr. Weeks) on Tuesday, and the oncologist on Wednesday. Thursday I meet with the heart surgeon to discuss the upcoming valve replacement. Oh, what joy!

Thanks for bumping my thread, too! I can use all the support I can get.

Umpmazza Mon Oct 17, 2011 07:53am

Steve I am hoping you a speedy and successful recovery, the umpiring world will need you back out there... Get well brother.

tjones1 Mon Oct 17, 2011 02:10pm

Glad to hear everything went well!

Hope you have a quick recovery and return to the field quickly!! Take care.

Best wishes.

Texas Aggie Fri May 01, 2015 01:26pm

Does anyone know what happened to SDS?

Welpe Fri May 01, 2015 01:27pm

I've seen him around. He's active on FB.

BretMan Sun May 03, 2015 02:09pm

Speak of the devil...

Somewhat ironically, I just saw a new post from Steve- the first in a long while- on another umpire discussion board.

jicecone Sun May 03, 2015 09:13pm

Steve,

Best of Luck to you.

Hope you have a quick recovery and return to the field quickly.
