Grass Basepaths

what is your opinion of grass basepaths between home and 1st and home and 3rd on a LL Baseball field? I am getting tired of trying to keep the dirt off the edges.

Grass Basepaths

Are you a groundskeeper or an umpire? Both teams play on it so why does it matter?

JRutledge Mon Aug 01, 2011 12:35pm

I have no opinion or care. I work with the field that I am dealt with.

Peace

Why are you spending even the briefest second trying to keep the dirt off the edges?

Trying to keep the soil off what edges?

Pipe down you grumpy umpires. Some of us wear more that one hat.

I've seen it, and it doesn't work. You'll get wear marks that look crappy after a while. I've also seen it done with artificial turf. That's better, but the plastic grass is just awful for a lot of reasons.

I've seen it (well, at the HS level, not LL level) and it can work. You're just trading one set of maintenance for another.

Wasn't being grumpy. He asked a question on an umpire board... I made the assumption he was an umpire and truly did wonder why he was worried about what he asked about.

Is there a www.groundskeepers.com out there? :)

I do not even understand the nature of the question on this board. Sorry but some of us have no idea what people are worried about when they ask these questions. And you have yet to answer why this question was asked.

Peace

Personnally I used to enjoy them much more when they were from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. We lived in a very affluent neighborhood and weren't allowed to get dirty. Having the grass there at second and third sure did help. When there was dirt (yuck), our Butlers would have to hold up the game to come out and brush us off, how embarrassing.

Sooooooooo, I am really no tsure what the heck your talking about but, I will speak to my attorney about a lawsuit against those people that moved them. That is terrible news. And to think the edges are getting dirty too. I will send out the Butler, first thing in the morning. I hope that helps.

the only dirt that has to be cleaned as a UMPIRE is the dirt on home plate.

As an umpire who cares.

As a groundskeeper, it builds up and makes the basepath a trough which then holds water instead of draining.

Yikes!

I don't get in a tizzy when folks post about those plastic Gerry Davis drawers, which no self respecting umpire would pull on, yet some get riled up about grass vs. Turface.

Fellas, I have two recommendations for y'all. Blue Moon ale, or Zaya Rum. Life it far too short to get fired up about who's turf someone is stepping on. ("That's a joke, son" - F.H. Leghorn)

The GD pants are the best fitting pants on the market today. If you don't like them, you're the one with a problem, IMO.

Easy now, I'm just trying to prove a point.

Next, I'll light a fire under anyone who umpires high school games using FED rules. Those guys.......

I don't think so taht it is a issue because both teams are play onto this surface and normally conditions remain the same. So,It dammed care about the surface.

They can be a good thing. When I have to look at field conditions I look at the mound, home plate area, and the foul lines. Grass, along the 1st and 3rd base foul lines, may help the games be played longer.
