On deck circle
 

Ok, since I just found this forum a few days ago, lots of different situations are running through my head, and I'll probably post a few more in the next few days! Here's my newest one:

18+ league with OBR rules. There is one batter who goes to the opponents on deck circle before batting. (Batter prior to him is righty, and they are on first base side). F3 complains about this, saying he doesn't think that is even allowed, and doesn't understand why, but also doesn't really make a stink. I mention I only know this is not allowed in FED, it is allowed in younger leagues that follow mostly OBR rules. From the searches I've seen, it seems as though it is OK, just wanted to make sure.

Not allowed under any code. Some individual leagues (mostly youth) allow (or even require) it. Since only one batter does it in your league, it seems that your league doesn't allow it.

The on-deck batter should be in the on-deck area of his team and not the other. Does he want to sit on their bench, too?

Because every field is not made equal. I have seen players get in the opposite on-deck circle, strictly for safety reasons. Depending upon whether a lefty or righty batter was up. I have seen in some LL fields where it is enforced by the league. I agree with that however, Jh and above, I have rarely seen it.

Minnesota has been experimenting this year with moving the on-deck batter so that he's always in the on-deck circle behind the batter as a safety issue (under the theory that the on-deck batter is less likely to be hit by a foul ball).

I have no idea if it will stick or not... since it's a "safety" issue, my guess is that it will.

Try to remember that LL is not just 12 and under. Many areas continue LL to 16 (I believe).

Some even continue it to 18. It's called Big League Baseball, the highest division of LL.

when I played little league, it was always on deck circle behind the batter. We played on a combo softball/60' baseball field (mound was removable), still had infield grass but the backstop dimensions were all softball, so for safety reasons, we had to modify the on deck rule. Our area only had space for one field, so the only way they could make it work for 10 year old baseball and softball was to build a combo field.

What rule makes it not allowed? That is what I can't seem to find. I understand normally you are on the on deck circle on your side, but I can't seem to find a rule that requires this. (Except in the Feds, I know where it is there, it's OBR I can't find it)

Other than where to put it, you will find no mention of the on-deck circle in the OBR book. And no mention of the On-Deck hitter except within the save rule.

That was neither arrogant nor ignorant. Why did you decide to get personal?

It's not like I invented the phrase, "Local rules are made by fools." It's said here all the time. (And it's nearly iron-clad true).

What in the world are you considering ignorant?

In any real league, ODB is staying on their own side of the field. The last place I want a player is in front of opposing fans close to opposing bench. Those that say it's safer to be behind batter than in front are simply misinformed or just want to invent SOMEthing in the rules to satisfy their need for control (like most local rules).

What level? Neither MSHSL nor Legion are doing anything like this.

Never said it did. LL goes all the way to through Big league as already mentioned.

Just curious, where in Minnesota are they trying this?
