IFF Signal

Just wondering if anyone using the following signal for IFF: Fist to the chest?
If so where can I find that signal or was it just something this crew decided on thier own? Thanks.

The guys I regularly work with regularly make up signals. Doesn't matter what the signal is as long as it alerts the umpires to the situation.

  • Fist to the chest
  • "Hang 10" signal
  • Tap the tip of the cap
  • Nod
  • Reposition your hat
  • Swipe across the belt-buckle
I have seen them all used for various signals, it is important to hit it in the pregame so you both know what you are calling.

I prefer the Tap the tip of the cap, as it most resembles the IFF signal.

$0.02 :D

Everyone I work with uses this for an IFF situation.

When I first started years ago, that was the sign for IFF, but have not seen it in 20 years.

The Pro schools teach it, but it isn't really used. Just as long as you and your partner are on the same page, it doesn't matter what you use.

The method I was taught originally was to the chest, but that was abandoned IIRC circa 1988 here. The preferred method is the fingertips to the bill of the hat with no outs and index finger to the bill of the hat for one out. This is what most umpires around these parts do.

For "what's the count?" I prefer twirling the index fingers around each other like a miniature traveling call. However, I guess there are those umpires who like to pat the top of their hats for this. I was taught that patting the top of the hat meant there was a really hot babe in the crowd. You pat your head and point in the general direction of said babe, giving your partner something to checkout while he's sweeping the dish.

Around here we use flat hand over the heart for no outs and index finger to the brim of the hat for one away. That way there is no confusion over the number of fingers touching the hat.

Fist to chest is indicating which side the GLM is on. Fingers indicate row number.

Tapping your palm (indicator) means "gimme the count"

Wiggling fingers, at your side, "gimme the outs".

Fingers to side of brim, IFF, no outs.

Index finger to side of brim, IFF, more than no outs.

That's this season. It's changed every year for the past dozen, or so.

steve,
how many fingers do you touch your bill with when there are tow outs...? Jk

when we have a hot mom we touch our stomach amd give a number that corresponds with a clock. i.e. a touch followed by a five would place her at your back right.

It depends on who I am working with. With new guys i usually will tap the hat and point to them from the field, or behind the plate just tap the forehead of my mask. With the regular crew, we do anything from hang ten, tip the cap, grab your cup, or just go thru a multitude of signs like a 3rd base coach to have fun

Most common sign I see these days, and one I use. Signal outs with both hands spread and either fists, or one finger pointing on each hand, then bring right hand to bill and tap with one finger.

Most common I see to say it is no longer in effect is a right hand wiping left forearm from elbow to wrist. Some folks don't use a sign to wipe off IFF, I do.

IFF situation in a AA game yesterday with 1 out. 3BU started the signal with index finger to the brim of his hat. So I would assume(I know) that that is what is taught at Pro School.
