1-man mechanics?
 
my partner got removed from a game i have this week, so i guess it's possible i may be on my own. how do you manage that kind of thing?

just try to hustle and do the best job you can?

Yes. Don't try to get too close to any play that cold hang you out to dry on a subsequent play.

Despite all that is wrong with their 2-man mechanics, the NFHS' Umpires Manual has a page (p. 37) on 1-man mechanics that offers 10 "guidelines" for working a 1-man game that are wortha look.

With no one on, come around F2 & B1 (3B side) to the mound and get an angle. Head for 2B if it is down in the OF. If there is a runner on, work the 3B-line and get the best angle possible.

Otherwise, work 1B & 3B-lines extended as you would on fair/foul and move quickly to get an angle.

In 1-Man mechanics angle is the KEY as you will never be able to get the distance you want.

Work your calls in order:
- Ball/Strike
- Fair/Foul
- Catch/No Catch
- Safe/Out

Finally... make sure you have some adult beverages (if you are legal) cooling at home for after the game.
