Despite all that is wrong with their 2-man mechanics, the NFHS' Umpires Manual has a page (p. 37) on 1-man mechanics that offers 10 "guidelines" for working a 1-man game that are wortha look.

With no one on, come around F2 & B1 (3B side) to the mound and get an angle. Head for 2B if it is down in the OF. If there is a runner on, work the 3B-line and get the best angle possible.
Otherwise, work 1B & 3B-lines extended as you would on fair/foul and move quickly to get an angle. In 1-Man mechanics angle is the KEY as you will never be able to get the distance you want. Work your calls in order: - Ball/Strike - Fair/Foul - Catch/No Catch - Safe/Out Finally... make sure you have some adult beverages (if you are legal) cooling at home for after the game. |
feel confident and know you ARE the best umpire there... Good Luck.
