Any league that encourages kids to STEAL, should be very suspect of the participants. :p

John, you coached a long time, right? Did they ever do a formal background check on you for that?

I coach my ten year olds team and his league mandates that coaches submit to background checks prior to consideration.

Indeed I did.

I was a "three season" coach back when I was coaching, and when I first started, they made us do so for EACH season. (Of course, maybe that was just for ME.) Later, when I was on the BOD we backed it off to an "annual" recert.

Don't remember the exact details, but IIRC, there are two "levels" of background check - kind of a "first level" and then an "in depth". We did "first level" for everyone, then if anything "unusual" showed up, we would go to the "in depth".

During my tenure, there was only one person who applied to coach who was denied a coaching position as a result of the check. I understand he is currently enjoying the amenities of one of our state's fine Correctional Facilities resulting from an event that occurred OUTSIDE the auspices of and completely unrelated to our programs.

Frightening and appalling. I fully endorse "background check programs" for youth sports associations, though we never required fingerprints.

If Tenafly is a chartered Little League then they are required to do a background check on all volunteers with repetitive contact with the kids - and that includes umpires.

LL doesn't require fingerprinting. It only requires checking the sex offender registry. There is also a "some number of them free" ability to do a "real" background check.

The article mentions a grant of some type - perhapes the grantor is requiring it.

In the small town where we call home there are just four registered sex offenders. Their crimes include Criminal Sexual Assault, Child Pornography/Film/Photos, Indecent Solicitation Of A Child and Unlawful Restraint. As the father of two just short of their teens, I am grateful that our baseball association keeps people like this away from our kids. I'll happily provide fingerprints and agree to a background check any day if it means making our children safer. It would be interesting to learn how much LL organizations pay to conduct background examinations for all umpires, coaches and mentors. Around here, we pay about $600 for my ten year old to play Spring ball. Most of that goes to field maintenance and umpires - most of whom are high school kids. Nice money for time limit games.
