Something odd in Cubs/Dodgers game

I just turned on the Cubs/Dodgers game today and noticed the home plate umpire was not using ball bags. He was just putting the baseballs in his pockets.

Is he wearing a plate coat?

Nope, short sleeve shirt. Had baseballs in front and back pockets.

is it possible he forgot his ball bags?

I bleed Cubbie blue so you can taunt all you want. At the start of today's game they announced four umpires but only had three take the field. Brenly even commented that someone got stuck in traffic or was last minute assigned to another Cactus League contest. I may have misheard but I thought he said something about borrowing gear.

Split squad game so they beat the Dodgers and were annhiliated by the Reds. Maybe next century.;)

Okay, then that's exactly what had happened. Somebody is in trouble. For even cutting it that close to get stuck in traffic.

Hopefully it wasn't a AAA kid at his first Major League Spring.

Carry all of your gear!

Box score says Alfonso Marquez was the PU, with Jim Reynolds the U1 and Scott Barry U3.

I have noticed in several spring training box scores that they only use three-man crews.

In fact, the games I've been to in Arizona, the base umps will rotate every three innings as well. It's a good idea when you're training.
