Check out the shiny acrylic on those maple bats. You don't see that on ash.

Patent pending: "Bat Safety System is nothing more than Polymeric Tape applied to the lower 18" of a solid wood bat."

Easy fix, extend the protective nets another 50 feet or 100 feet down the lines. It'll cost them what, five, maybe ten grand per stadium. Chump change for any MLB team.

Nets will help the people in the stands, but the broken bats affect game play, which they should not. Some player is going to get seriously hurt.

I saw bats the other day (may have been Brett Brothers) which were bamboo. Light and strong. Also very interesting.

Nets are lame. I would hate that.

Or just go ahead and enclose the field in netting and be done with it.

Or give the fans bubble wrap and helmets to not require them to actually watch the game

Can't say for sure what the latest holdings in NY on this issue are, but here in California the courts quote an older NY (31 years old) case: Here's the money quote:

"Akins v. Glen Falls City School Dist. (1981) 53 N.Y.2d 325 In the Akins case, the court detailed the widely recognized principle that an owner of a baseball field is not an insurer of the safety of its spectators. The court further pointed out that the perils of the game are not so imminent that due care on the part of the owner requires that the entire playing field be screened. The court took note of the fact that many spectators prefer to sit where their view is unobstructed by fences or protective netting and the proprietor of a ballpark has a legitimate interest in catering to those desires."

Maple bats may be a different story - As in any legal case, depending on the facts, your mileage may vary.

My son started using bamboo bats five years ago in scout ball. They weigh the same, but they're harder and significantly stronger and more durable than any wood bat. It's the only type of wood bat that he never broke. He used one for two years of batting practice and retired it unbroken.

And talk about a plentiful resource.

These bats are only have bamboo in the very center of the barrel of the bat. The rest of the bat is four pieces of wood resined together.

It is bamboo throughout. One hundred percent. Little rectangular-shaped reeds all glued together and turned into a bat.

But sounding certain when you're wrong often gives others the illusion that you're right. You did a good job of that on this post.

Do you dispute everything? Are you successful with that approach down there?

The bamboo Brett Bros. bats that I have seen have a bamboo core and a wood shell.

Sven K Sat Aug 14, 2010 11:34am

They make both.

My plan for universal use of balsa bats would end these controversies immediately.

Any bat shatterage would feel like the flutter of butterfly wings...
