Running in reverse?

Runners on second and third, no outs. Batter flies out to right. Runners tag up and take off running. Outfielder throws home. Runner from second reaches third safely before he realizes that the other runner is now in a rundown between third and home. Would it be legal for the runner (now on third) to run back to second?

And as sad as it was to watch, both runners returned to their bases safely.

The kid on 3rd was so out of breath from the rundown that we thought he was injured from the dive back to third after the play....turns out he was just out of breath......kids.
