3-Man Basics???

Have a three-man game tonight. Only the second one I have ever done and first in two years. Just the basics I guess is what I am looking for. Not sure if I ma working first or third.

From 1B
-A position with bases empty
-B position with runner on first
-A position if there is a runner on 2nd or 3rd
-go out on all balls hit to C and RC

From 3B
-D position with bases empty
-D position with runner on first
-C position with runner on 2nd or 3rd
-go out on all balls hit to LC

Please correct me if I am wrong anywhere.

I don't have a lot time right now, so here are some basics. I'm sure someone will fill in more:

U1 is in A with no runners, R1 only, R1/R2, R1/R3, R1/R2/R3, R3
U3 is in D with no runners, R2, R2/R3, R3.

So much wrong.

Flyballs: Depends on the mechanics. You will either always go out on fly balls to your area when you're on the line, or only go out on trouble balls from the line, or go out on trouble balls even when you're in the middle (on all -- when the ball is in your area).

You'll need to decide whether U1 or U3 is the "quarterback"

No one on: A, D
R1 only: A, deep B/C
R2 only: Deep B, D
R3 only: A, D
R1, R2: A, C
R1, R3: A, C
R2, R3: Deep B, D
R1, R2, R3: A, C

Note that your mechanics might also have U1 go beck to A whenver there are two outs (even, for example, with R2 only).

If you're U1, then whenever PU rotates to third, you rotate home. U3 rotates to first (and second) in this instance.

If there are runners on and PU doesn't rotate, U1 takes BR into second (and U3 has prior runners at second and all runners at third).

If you haven't done much, I strongly suggest you take the plate. The work / rotations / responsibilities are almost the same as in two man and you can see what the others are doing.

Unfortunately...

I don't really have a chioce other than U1 or U2...

Short version - U1 in A with a runner on first

As stated, fly ball coverage varies - talk it out before the game.

Rules of thumb for basic positioning before the next pitch:

Runner on 1st, umpire on 1st.

Runner on 3rd, umpire on 3rd, unless runner on 1st also.

The other umpire is easy to figure once you get 1st and 3rd figured out.

Well...

I think I did a pretty ggod job. I was U1. Very first call of the game was a banger and I got it right, only problem was I was in foul territory when I made my call. Did that a couple of time befoer a partner got to me and corrected it. I had three more bangers and even a batter hit in the box through the rest of the game and I think I was 5/5. I have another 3-man on Friday, can't wait to work it and be better that I was tonight. BTW, they had me in A whenever we had two outs and I went out on everything C to RC.

Definitely U1 is the best place to be for your first time. Hopefully you were able to watch U3 (if he did it right) and learn so that next time you will be able to take U3.

We work it with U3 as the lead, everyone else works off of what U3 does when the ball is hit.

Sounds like a good start. It gets better the more you work it.

Thanks
David
