Recently there have been posts concerning how much lighter and cool (less heat retention) some of the new equipment is. I found a couple of things that work for me and wanted to share.

I invested in UnderArmour. The short sleeve version runs for about $24. It is form fitting and wicks the sweat away from you. I have started wearing it for every plate game. I have seen a number of versions (Nike, Coolmax, Intera)that appear to do the same thing. UnderArmour was in stock when I got mine.

I have an item called a Camelback that I use to carry fluids. I picked up on this when I was a grunt in the Army and started carrying it to ball games with me. It carries around 100 oz of fluid and because it is insulated, they fluids stay cool all day. I paid around $80 for mine, BUT, they come much cheaper and in all different sizes. I have seen smaller versions at Wal-Mart for around $20. I have a D-ring, like is used for rapelling, that I snap onto the fence and it keeps it off the ground. I have had mine for almost 5 years now and it has been through some rough stuff, including over 40 parachute jumps, without breaking.

I have a big Arctic Zone cooler that I use. Yesterday, after I had geared up and was ready to head to the field, the last thing I had to pick up was my cooler. It was sitting on my passenger seat. I went to lift it from the cover, and apparently it wasn't secure. The cover came off in my hand and the cooler fell upside down on my passenger seat. The entire contents emptied leaving a deep puddle in the passenger seat that slowly filtered onto the back seat floor. What a mess!

That should've been my clue that it wasn't my day. I took a foul ball to the arm just below the elbow and now I can barely move it. Typing is excruciating. I think I'll stop now.

chicago summers...

I deal with heat and humidity, and one of the things I've started doing after noticing the MLB guys do it is putting some towels in a cooler filled with ice water, and just covering your head with one between innings. Sure, you get a little wet, but it's worth it.

I also wear underarmour-they make a looser shirt that I like-unquestionably, the best "cool shirt" on the market.

I too recently discovered underarmour. I was actually looking for something along those lines when I first heard of it. I bought one of the tight shirts, and while it does keep me much cooler, I find it to be uncomfortably constricting, although it might just be to small (I'm kinda fat :-). I think I am going to try the loose fitting style, as I am very pleased with the material's performance.
