I called a game with Steve Yeager's kid catching. During the game, I quipped, "Thank your dad for inventing the throat protector."

He didn't know what I was talking about, so I told him how and why it was invented. (His dad was kneeling on deck and a sawed-off bat hit him, and the spike end lodged between his windpipe and his jugular vein. Legendary Dodger trainer Bill Buhler designed it and later marketed it.) Late in my game, the kid called Yeager over and asked him if my story was true, and he just started laughing. He also made a joke, "Why do you think we all drive such nice cars?"

Listen, at MLB, MiLB, NCAA level, yes, you let it go.

If he says it not directed at me, in the confines of the dugout, I'm letting it go.

If he is on the top step looking right at me when he yells it, bye bye. This isn't a game changing EJ either, this is a slimey bench coach who can go have an early beer. In the video, did Torre seem to care?

You look like you are soft if you don't, and it will only get worse from there as your reputation of being a pushover follows you. Then you'll get some real headaches, don't you think?

Maybe its different depending on how long you've been around. Steve, perhaps if they yell at you, you have a relationship with that team for several years and you know things won't get out of hand. They know you, they know where you draw the line, and there is some mutual understanding.

For someone who is new to that league, those players are TESTING. And PU should rise to the test and grow a pair.

Added in the edit: For rec league amateur ball... not talking about higher levels here.

Jon Miller is worth the money for Satellite radio. It drives my Fiance3 crazy when I go sit in the car to listen to games. But I used to think my Grandfather was crazy to do the same thing when I was a kid, LOL.

With MLB.com, you get radio and TV.

That is a fantastic story!

Hey, maybe he wants to have to go to the car to be alone. ;)

Can you hear it? "I'm beginning to think that you love Jon Miller and Mike Krukow more than me."

"Come on, Honey, that's crazy ... Oh, wow, I can't come in right now, Lincecum's got 12 Ks through six innings."

I am "new" to this league, as I haven't done this league in about 18 years or so. I tossed someone for drawing a line in inning 5 of my first game. I threw another the next week for language and bat/helmet throwing. I do not want to get myself banned from the league because I throw everyone out like some kind of hothead, so I'm not about to throw someone out just for yelling "bullsh*t" from the dugout, no matter how they are standing, or sitting, or facing, or whatever. You do what you want in your games. If I threw everyone who deserved it out, I would soon find myself without my $300 weekend, and I need that money. I will give warnings for language that isn't personal in nature.

This league has about 100 teams in it, in 11 separate divisions, so I'm not going to see the same players week after week on a regular basis. But one of the goals this league is striving for is to keep the players in the game as much as possible (since they pay a lot of money to play), so in this particular league, I have a slightly higher threshold than I normally do. I will jack them in a heartbeat if they get personal or prolonged. If they get physical, it's an automatic 3 game or permanent suspension, so I don't worry about that. Trust me, nobody mistakes me for being "weak." I dress them down even if I don't toss them from the game, and they learn that I won't stand for further shenanagins.

I do not think that "you are ****ing kidding" is on a similar plane as "you are ****ing horrible;" the former is a statement of disbelief whereas the latter is an intentional insult.

OK, I play along with your literal interpretation of the word "says" and ask you, if he says it only loud enough for you and F5 and maybe a few guys in the 3b dugout who are paying attention, do you warn him or toss? I know your answer because you already said "he's getting warned".

It certainly is different for how long you have been around, how you conduct yourself on the field, how approachable you are, how you interact with the players, how you demonstrate your rule knowledge, how you control the game, how you make decisions in tough situations, how you hustle and a quite a few more things too.

But, having a short fuse and a fast finger gets you far less repect than you may think.

If you take the time to excell at the above-mentioned list, your not going to be tested as much as you think. That doesn't mean you won't have to pull the trigger. But when the time comes, the players will know that their teammate is gone because you gave them enough rope to hang theirself with.

IMO, thats a good official.

Thanks for your input Mr. Roget.

Kevin Finnerty Wed Oct 07, 2009 10:39pm

By most accounts, Roget was an extremely annoying guy to know.

Example:

You: "Goodbye, Roget."

Roget: "Goodbye, farewell, ciao, cheerio, adieu, adios, so long, god-speed, bye-bye, ta-ta, toodle-do ... "

You: "SHUT THE F*** UP!"

So...since I already answered the question, one for you...

Do you bait everyone this way?
