I went for my local little league and they (being the Parents) offered to buy me my own gear before that I only used league gear. I did to help a team of friends kids.

My neighbors just returned too. They love it and go annually.

Question - anyone else think there are more wild pitches this yr - or is it just me noticing?

That's great if you got a set of gear out of it.

I can understand volunteering from time to time to help a local league out. I can almost understand the desire of LL to exclusively use volunteer umpire. I cannot understand the eagerness of umpires to provide free labor so the owner of CDP can increase his profit margin.

The owner was not even a thought I just wanted to help these kids. I wouldn't say no to kids because I wanted to prove something to an adult.

The kids are not affected by whether or not you volunteer, Do you think he'd kill the golden goose and shut down if umpires didn't work for free?

No, he'd make a little less money, but CDP would survive. You might like to think you're helping the kids, and he encourages that perception, but it isn't reality.

of course they encourage volunteer umps "for the kids" umpire fees is probably the biggest expense of any tournament. umps work for free, they make more money...seems pretty simple to me.

Look, he helped the kids, or at least their parents, by not having them pay the umpire fee imposed by CDP if you don't provide an umpire. CDP has to contract out (pay) for local umpires to fill the gaps. So he worked along with paid guys.

I will never, ever understand this. And yes, I've been there.

I've heard the paid umpires are garbage. I would assume that if they didn't use paid umpires, the owner would just increase the entry fee, and the team waiting list would get a little bit smaller.
