I have finally agreed with McCarver

I don't know why this irks me so.

Yesterday, third inning, Yanks-Sawx. Yanks have just broken the ice and are up 1-nil. 2 outs, Damon on second base. A-Rod at bat.

High and tight pitch. Batter ducks, ball hits bat squarely. AR turns, pointing to his shoulder, saying the ball brushed him. Jimmy Joyce signals a huge "FOUL!"

Replays--like they matter--showed the call to be correct.

I wait for Tim McRat to chime in how the umpire is the reincarnation of Torquemada. Instead he iterates my thoughts: (I paraphrase) "Why does a big-time hitter like A-Rod want an HBP here? Doesn't he want to prolong the at-bat and potentially drive in a run in a tight game?"

Of course, Skirt-Rod grounds out meekly to end the frame. He then turns to his 1B coach and makes the same "brushing" movement on his shoulder.

I HATE it when any batter whines. But I was more aghast that TMcC actually said the right thing!

Am I picking nits here by being disgusted with this nancy boy future HoFamer?

ace in CT

Even Nancy gets one right once in a while. Try to go with it....now breathe in and breathe out.........:)

FWIW, A-Rod is a disgusting person overall. It's pretty bad when even the majority of your own team's fans can't stand you.

I saw that pitch, and it didn't touch anything but bat.

Great thing about opinions is that they aren't facts. I'm pretty sure Yanks fans, in fact i I know, that the majority of them are okay with the guy. For now. At least he has a shred of honesty in him, even if it is just a public relations policy.

Okay with him. For now. A shred of honesty as a PR ploy. Oh yeah, that's a ringing endorsement!

McCarver is a buffoon

:mad:I never agree with this maroon. He says during a the game this weekend, "Boy, the catcher (Molina) is sure doing a good job of keeping the pitch out of the center of the plate"? I thought the pitcher was throwing the ball?? What the Hell is this supposed to mean? Everyone knows the catcher sets up inside, outside ect. This guy has to have something on someone, or he would not be doing these games. Isn't there someone else who can do better at talking stupid?

So, you don't think that McCarver knows much about catching, huh?

He played the position at the major league level in four decades, is a two time all star, and was the personal catcher for Steve Carlton when he played for the Phillies. In St. Louis, he was Bob Gibson's favorite catcher. If McCarver says something about catching, it's a safe bet that he's right. It's rules and umpiring that he has a problem with.

What's that saying about a blind squirrel finding a nut? :D

Fixed it for you :)

Now you say he doesn't know anything about catching? Hey, you have to give him at least that.

TussAgee11 Mon Aug 10, 2009 07:32pm

Just because he knows something doesn't mean I want to listen to it. Joe Morgan, prime example. Give me someone with some actual broadcasting talent behind the microphone any day of the week.

Of course he knows something about catching. But that doesn't qualify you to TV, or at least it shouldn't.

But it does qualify him to talk about catching, which was what I was pointing out to Ump 64. Just like Morgan can talk about the playing aspect of the game, yet is very ignorant when it comes to the rules or how to umpire, just like McCarver.

But according to Bob Gibson, the only thing McCarver knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit. :D

That's why he thinks that the catcher arranges where the pitch will end up.

Perhaps, but it doesn't qualify him to broadcast on the subject. Behind the mic, he's a moron, regardless of the subject. It just seems that some folks check their brains at the door when entering the broadcast booth. He's one.

Sounds suspiciously similar to quote by Jim Palmer:

"The only thing Earl (Weaver) knows about big-league pitching is that he couldn't hit it." - Jim Palmer
