Mariners Mark Lowe balk?

I have never seen this guy pitch but his "set" seems to be a balk every time-no stop.

He is a reliever for the Mariners. I am watching him right now on mlb tv

mbyron Thu Jul 23, 2009 02:47pm

If there are no runners, the requirement to stop lapses. Relievers often pitch from the set even with no runners.

And your link does not come up with any video of this pitcher.

jwwashburn Thu Jul 23, 2009 02:54pm

There was a runner on base.

I was not linking to a video of the pitcher. I merely said where I was watching the game.

SanDiegoSteve Thu Jul 23, 2009 03:46pm

Well, if you want comments on it, you need to post the video for us.

jwwashburn Thu Jul 23, 2009 03:49pm

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this guy pitch and noticed the same thing.

If I find video, I will post it asap!

Kevin Finnerty Thu Jul 23, 2009 04:55pm

I did not see a link this balk either, but I did decide to subscribe to MLB.com TV and man am I glad I did!

Thanks, Wash!

MLB.com TV is FANTASTIC as long as you do not plan to work during the day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays

Im a huge M's fan and no its not a balk, very close, but not one...

jwwashburn Fri Jul 24, 2009 02:23pm

I am a huge M's fan, so trust me, the M's pitcher is not balking...pretty funny. The guy "bounces" his hands instead of setting them. I am still efforitng a video clip.

I'm with Joe here...a change of direction is not a stop, and bouncing the hands is a balk. This of course without seeing it, but based on Joe's description, sounds like a balk that isn't being called. The rules are clear about making sure the pitcher doesn't try to "beat the rule" by not coming to a stop.

Anyone that has an MLB.com account can watch this guy pitch in the archives of the 7-23-09 game vs the Tigers.

I have seen several hundreds of MLB pitchers and have not seen this since I have learned the rule (20 years ago?)

Now, my son and I have watched several games from the 1970's and it seems like nobody ever stopped...did the rule change sometime in "recent" memory?

Joe

PS Steve, "recent" does not include Clay Kirby.

This does not show Lowe Balking but it does have Angels announcer Rex Hudler
say "THE TIE DOES NOT GO TO THE RUNNER"

Rex is cool. He's one former player that gets it. I always enjoy interviews featuring him.

Kevin Finnerty Fri Jul 24, 2009 08:07pm

He is becoming my favorite all time analyst. Rex sees everything. He is also the most fun guy to listen to that I can even remember. (Mike Krukow is fairly close there.) Rex knows the game so all them struggles with English is forgivable.

Greatest Rex gaffe: He is interviewing then No.1 pick Trevor Bell live during the game the night the Angels drafted the kid. Rex gushes about how the kid's grandfather was the original Bozo the Clown: "I heard your grandpa's the original Bozo the Clown!! ... How's he doing?"

Bell: "Uh, he passed away several years ago."

Rex: "Oh wow, my bad."

Watching Lowe again tonight against the Angels. BALKEDY BALK BALK BALK....That's a BALK!

jwwashburn Wed Sep 09, 2009 12:10am

Mark Lowe Career Statistics | Mariners.com: Stats

152 innings and he has never had a balk called on him. The problem is that there is not a lot of video available of this Mariners reliever not getting called for a BALK.

Wow, all those MLB umpires couldn't be wrong -- it must be a CONSPIRACY!!

JW, I have to ask, do you actually perform any contribution to life besides sitting around finding fault with everyone or thing?

Are you related to Mcveigh?

For heavens sake man, get a job.

I can only think of two explanations for you:

1) You have an unhealthy obsession with me

or

2) You are an idiot.

My brain tells me that I have to be wrong about this but my eyes see a stinking balk. I know a stop when I see one and I know a bounce when I see one. Lowe bounces.

If there are any dvr gurus out there maybe someone can post a video of Mr Lowe.

Well, because Rex was called "out" enough on that type of play, he figured it out. Rex as a fielder, was also one of those smart enough, to let a fly ball in the infield, with less than 2 out, and a runner on first, drop at his feet and then pick the ball up and throw to second if the runner at first was faster than the batter-runner.

Kevin Finnerty Thu Sep 10, 2009 09:56am

Rex played for Billy Martin and Earl Weaver at the beginning of his career, and Joe Torre a little later on. He also played with Lou Piniella, Dave Winfield, Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray. So Rex loves it and soaked it all up from some of the greatest baseball minds of that or any era.

And he is a great color analyst. The only guy I ever heard who sees more of what's going on than Rex was another Angel color man, and one of those greatest minds of any era: Joe Torre.

SethPDX Thu Sep 10, 2009 03:05pm

I love listening to Hudler. He did some Division Series games a few years ago and was great at describing the game. He's also a fantastic guest on the radio interviews he gives.

Back in 96, when he was playing for the Angels, I went to an Angels game on a family vacation to Disneyland. Rex had a big game, got like 3 hits or something, so I got a Hudler jersey t-shirt on the way out. I still wear it a few times a year because Rex is that cool.
