Batting out of order - I need clarification
 

Situation....B8 bats out of order in B7 slot.

1. B8 gets a hit...defense protests before next pitch....B8 is called out.....who is the correct batter to bat next? B8 again or B9?

2. B8 gets a hit.....B7 is batting with a 1-1 count when the defense protests? I know nobody is out.....but who is the correct batter to be installed to bat? Should it be B9 who is the correct batter after B8? Or should it be B8 because it is his slot?

1) Correct batter would be the one to follow who B8 batted for. B8 is not out. The one he batted for is out.

2) Correct batter would who follows B8. Once a pitch was thrown to the next batter after B8's at bat was completed, legalized B8's at bat. And, the lineup picks up with B9 up to bat.

You are correct in situation 1. B7 is declared out. So B8 is the correct batter?

If B7 is the one called out, then B8 is the batter. If B2 is the one called out for B8 batting in his place, then B3 would be the batter.

It is whoever follows the one called out in the lineup.

As a coach I ran into this situation at least once a year and only one umpire I have encountered had any clue how to handle any batting out of order situation. A couple of times I even had umpires call 2-outs on this situation. The other coaches didn't have a clue.

For that reason I studied the rule but I still needed the clarification you gave me.

It's called BOO or BOOT, but it should be called BTSTBWIYT.

Being Too Stupid To Bat When It's Your Turn.

The person who was too stupid to bat is called out. It's the same as if he struck out. Pick up with the next batter.

You'll likely not be confused again.

FYI....I coach and now starting to umpire in the far south Chicago suburbs...rec and travel. I must admit this does happen mostly in rec.

Now that I'm starting to ump myself.....I'm finding out how many umpires don't take the time to visit chat rooms like this and make sure they do understand the rules. I've seen too many calls made that are myths. "Hands are part of the bat" was common in our league, until I started coaching in this league!! My players love me because I have yet to lose when I challenge an ump. (I never argue judgment calls.) Knowledge is power.

Another reason you probably don't see this situation......the scorekeper or manager has to catch it. My wife/scorekeeper sits in or near the dugout and is in total communication with me constantly. She also knows how to handle most situations like this. That is important.

Fed and OBR would rule the same way on the two situations in the OP, but in certain other situations, they would differ. The various softball codes are all over the place with BOO, so I suspect the same is true in baseball. What code are you playing under?

I thought the official scorer (like the umpire) was not supposed to call BOO to anyone's attention, even if the scorer was associated with one of the teams.

often times the official scorer is in one of the dugouts or is an immediate team member. in kheisner's case, his official scorer is in or near the dugout. if that's the case, there's nothing we can do about it
