Old but interesting article on MLB umpires

This is an article from 1998 about MLB umpires and comments from managers, umpires and players. I found it to be a good read, and thought I would pass it along. Sorry if you've seen it before, but I wanted to share it with the gang here.

The recent string of articles getting posted here prompted me to do some digging...

Here's a slightly older and less interesting article on umpires from the September 17, 1997 issue of Baseball Weekly's "Clubhouse" section: Young umpires learn game, gain respect.

"After Game Five of last year's NLCS, several Braves estimated that Gregg was calling strikes that were as much as 18 inches off the plate."

I remember vaguely watching this game, but don't remember it that well. A foot and a half off the plate? Really?

Remember, these are Braves players here. They have their wives convinced that 6 inches is really 10!.

I wouldn't say it's less interesting. I thought you did quite well in the interview.
