...but does it match the always-popular red/scarlet umpire shirt?!?

It kills me how many of the guys in my association 1) still love that red shirt and 2) don't buy anything new. Ever.

Admittedly, I was a fan of the red when it first came out. Now, I don't even bring it with me so there no temptation for my partner (whomever that may be) to suggest wearing the red. Now, if they had red ball bags to go w/ my red hat and red shirt, that might change my mind! :-) On second thought...probably not.

I too, have strong opinions on guys who don't keep their gear in good shape...especially their hats, shirts, and pants...those are the things that the non-umpires notice when we step on the field. There are very few guys out there who are that hard-up for money that they can't keep their uniforms looking sharp. IMO, guys who don't look sharp bring down the entire association's reputation.

Has anyone worn the new New Era 5950s with the poly (rather than wool) material? I like the idea of no shrinking and moisture management, but haven't bought one yet.

I know of the 5950's and they're nice.

This veteran thought the hats were somewhat tacky.

I agree with whoever it was that suggested camo. (Then I might have an excuse to buy a camo HSM--I've always wanted one.)

This veteran wears a camo ball cap all the time, complete with eagle/American flag on the front, flaming stars & stripes on the long bill, an American flag on the left side, an American flag pin front left, and two cross pins (one is an American flag on a cross). Under the eagle is embroidered "USA" with a gold leaf cluster surrounding it. In between the eagle's beak and the USA is a pin from my old army unit, the 2nd Armored Division, which at the time was commanded by the late Major General George S. Patton IV.

I get many compliments on my hat. A camo HSM would be sweet, but I think I'm going back to a traditional mask next season.

This veteran didn't give a damn about the hats, pins, ribbons or bracelets. It was what they stood for and that there were people who gave a damn about what they stood for.

The point was that you don't speak on behalf of all veterans (let alone on this board,) and that criticism of the manner of the memorial is not criticism of the sentiment itself.

I more than understand who I speak for.

Re-check my post. One would think if you're old enough to be a vet you're old enough understand sarcasm. If not, look it up.
