This is my favorite video of all time. Joe In Missouri |
I love the description!
"Before a baseball game, an umpire should go over the ground rules with both managers. Learn how to go over ground rules as a baseball umpire in this free video on sports officiating. Expert: Len Bari Bio: Len Bari is a semi-pro bowler with a 216 average, and is the manager of Maric Lanes is Astoria, Queens NY. Filmmaker: Buccola Richard" Semi-pro bowler huh? I have watched about 5 now-they only get better.

I saw these before, but I forgot how great they are.
"This is a great field for Little League. There's no holes in the backstop. You could have the LLWS here." :D But my favorite baseball video of all time is right here (watch out for the language): YouTube - Earl Weaver |

how to be a Baseball Umpire by San Diego Steve.
I'm still trying to figure out why my name is associated with this garbage. I guess it was an attempt at humor, but I am not finding it funny. Here I thought I would see a very professional looking and speaking person in the video, such as a major league umpire, which would be much closer to how I would make such a video. |
MTD, Jr. and I belong to two umpiring associations in the Toledo area. One assigns H.S. baseball and fastpitch softball and H.S. summer baseball and fastpitch softball, as well as travel league baseball and fastpitch softball and slow pitch softball leagues. The other association only assigns travel league baseball and fastpitch softball and slow pitch softball leagues. The membership of the first association are all OhioHSAA registered umpires; the second membership is made up of both umpires who are OhioHSAA registered umpires and umpires who are not OhioHSAA registered umpires. The same person is the assigner (and member of both associations).
Last night I had a travel league (11U) baseball game assigned by the second association. My partner was straight out of the video. He was not an OhioHSAA registered umpire. He worked the plate. He wore his hat backwards all of the time, wore a red (frame and pads) catcher's mask, and a watch on his left wrist, and did NOT wear any ball bags (he stuffed the game balls in his pants pockets. I will say this, he did wear heather gray plate pants and plate shoes. MTD, Sr. |
I am sorry Steve. I was joking. because most of us don't know each other personally, you did not take it the way I thought you would. My apologies.
Is there any way to change the title of the thread? Joe In Missouri. |

I'm hooked on this series. This stuff cracks me up.
My favorite so far is in the equipment video: "You awlso need onea 'dese - a mask. It helps keep you from geedin' a loose tooth, a bwoken nose, or an eyeball pawped out." |
Quote:
Did you see in this video while ole #7 is talking to the camera, a kid is warming up the pitcher without a mask on? C'mon ump. What if he gets a tooth knocked loose, a broken nose, or an eyeball popped out? :):):) |
Now I've gotta quit. The guy who works for me just came in to see what all the laughing is about.

His Bowling videos are awesome, as well.

I cannot get enough of this guy...Watching the Bowling ones now.
Expert Village is the name of the outfit that puts this out. I can only imagine their " How to meet girls": Hi, my name is Joe. I work part time at Sonic, live with my Aunt in a spare room and play Atari most of the day. Works EVERY time! |

No disrespect to Mr. Jenkins (with all honesty), but how many unproductive comments does one have to post before something happens?

UmpRube,
A moderator will find this nonsense eventually and take out the trash. You can report it by using the triangle icon in the corner of the post if you like. Do not be overly concerned with this individual, who has made brief visits before and will likely come again. |
Sorry.
Thanks, I have tag some of the responses. I do feel that I have to appologize to the forum for (lack of a better word) baiting him/her. Being part of an online forum for such a short time I now know that the best thing to do it just not respond, I will remember this in the future.
|
Don't worry about it, you're fine. Trolls come and go all the time around here.

I think I my partner from last night's game watched these videos and took pointers from them
Giving loud commentary on everything that's happening (runs scored, total runs per inning, saying out loud that the batter reached first because of the dropped third strike). He really was acting like a color commentator. Wearing baseball cleats behind the plate, the only thing that was protecting his feet were the ends of his shinguards. *Edited*-He also didn't have a plate brush, just called time and kicked dirt off the plate. The real kicker was that we were fighting darkness at the end of the game. He announced for EVERYONE to hear "*fielding team*, your assignment is to finish this inning in less than 13 minutes so you can get one more turn at-bat." However, we may not have needed to do that if he didn't spend 2-3 minutes between each inning chatting it up with the parents in the stands. And I looked at my schedule, I have games with him 4 more times this summer... |

I think the guy in the videos would be a great umpire if he could only get some quality training. He definitely has the desire. |

What if someone, with a great passion for psychology, your field of study, but no training, hung up a shingle and began giving advice to people who believed him because of that passion? The clown in those videos, if you read the posts at that site, is actually influencing people. His so-called passion and his nerve to post those ridiculous videos makes him, in the eyes of some neophytes, credible. This is another, more modern way, to perpetuate myths and make the lives of umpires who work to really improve their craft, miserable. Passion, my young friend, must be tempered with some amount of reasonableness or knowledge in order to positively benefit someone. The only positive attribute of those videos is their comedic value. |
Quote:
I think comparing psychology to umpiring is like comparing apples to oranges. The result of someone taking the umpire seriously is that they might develop some bad habits. The results of someone taking the amateur psychologist seriously could be much more costly. Baseball is just a game afterall. I really don't think the posted videos will cause any harm. The people responding are probably being sarcastic. People complain about flowerchild's insults in the same thread that they diss the guy in the video. It doesn't work both ways. |

He doesn't, however, need to be doing instructional videos on the internet. By doing so he opens himself up to pats on the back or laughter. Would you go to a clinic if this youtube hero was the featured instructor? I hope not. I have no idea how to play the piano. If I get on youtube and try to show people how - with passion - I suspect I would deservedly be ragged on some message board somewhere. On a side note, I respect this guy and small-ball umpires everywhere. I don't have the patience to work these games, but I'm glad some of you guys do! Thumbs up! |
Quote:
I believe small-ball umpires deserve as much credit as those who do big-boy ball, because those younger kids deserve good umpires just as much as anybody else does. This Len guy probably works for nothing and they are happy to have him. He did say in one of his videos that safety is the most important thing, so even if he has stuff to work on, at least everyone is going home in one piece. |
Sure, he deserves credit. I help coach my son's nine year old team. We have HORRIBLE umpires. I would never make fun of them.
But THIS guy is an arrogant SOB. He posted videos with an outfit called EXPERT VILLAGE. He announced to the world: Hey World! I am a moron...Please ridicule me! |
