Scoring Question
 

While watching the Reds game I came across an interesting situation. Johnny Cueto was batting while a runner(Janish) was on second. 0-2 count with 0 outs. Cueto squared to bunt causing Pujols and Thurston to come in to field the bunt. Cueto pulls the bat back and swings sending a ground ball to the charging Pujols, who fields and throws to the SS Greene who is covering third and tags out the runner(Janish). While the Cardinals weren't paying attention Cueto decided to take second base. While running there the Cardinals make an attempt to run and cover the base. What would the scoring on this play be? Would it be a stolen base because they made an attempt to throw him out or would it be a fielder's choice because he went to second on indifference to the runner? Thanks.

10.07 The official scorer shall credit a stolen base to a runner whenever the runner advances one base unaided by a hit, a putout, an error, a force-out, a fielder’s choice, a passed ball, a wild pitch or a balk,

Sorry - no stolen base.

I imagine it would be scored the same way you would on a single where the B/R goes to 2B on the thow home in an attempt to retire R2. Obvious exception would be that this case involves the FC rather than a hit awarded to the batter.

he simply advanced to second on the play. statistically, it's nothing more that what it was...reach by fielder's choice.
