What to do?

In a 60' game over the weekend I was PU. R1 and R2, one out. Batter hits a ground ball to F5 who bobbles it, picks it up and dashes for the bag for the force at third. BU closes on 3B and pauses to see who wins the race to the bag. About a step from the bag, F5 reaches out with ball in glove, tags R2 in the chest, and steps over the base. BU calls runner safe claiming F5 never touched the base. Some minor griping about the missed tag, but the DC lets it go and comes out to change pitchers. During the change, BU comes to me to say F5 never touched the bag. I agree and asked if he saw the tag. He says no - he was watching to see whose foot touched the bag first.
My questions are - Should I have given the BU some sort of indication that I saw a tag? or, should I wait for him to ask me if I saw a tag? I have read that some umpires have a "I have something for you" signal, but I have never read or heard anybody explain exactly what it is. Would that be an appropriate signal to use here?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Pete

I'd say, "Get the F back in left field where you belong."

Okay -- maybe not. But, I'm not adding to the call or discussing it now.

Agreed. That would be the absolute WORST time for BU to go have a discussion with PU. Turn around and jog to the outfield as soon as time is called for the conference.

Well now, some LL umpires I know will go stand by the mound to count warm-up pitches, then tell the new pitcher the outs, runners, etc.

I refuse to participate in these antics, and this practice is changing for the better in my area.

Sad to say...when I first started out and was doing only LL, this is how they taught us. I hope they've since changed that but who knows.
