73 WS Uniforms
 

Watching the 73 WS highlights on MLB. I noticed the Umpires were wearing different color plate coats. Some games HPU and U2 LFU and RFU wearing the dark red coat, while U1 and U3 wore the Navy Blue Coat.
Another game they switched and U1 and U3 wore dark red. It just looked strange.
Also, my, how positioning, timing and mechanics have changed (for the better)JMHO

I may be wrong, but I believe this was because of the division of the AL & NL umpires. The AL guys wore the Red coat for a while, so I'm assumingthe guys in blue were the NL umps assigned to the game.

Didn't they wear AL/NL hats when working all star games, world series, etc?

Thanks, that's probably why. I love those old games too.

In addition to wearing the red coat back in the 70s, those trendstters in the AL introduced the red shirt in the 90s.

Let's not forget those Elbeco shirt collars laid out over the lapels ala Disco Duck!
