Question

I know this is an officiating forum, but I'm guessing some of you have knowldege of official scoring, too.

Strange play in a recent rookie league game. Please help.

Batter hits pop fly to short left field. Ball is coming down about 15 feet off of dirt and near left field line. Shortstop is moving over and left fielder is coming in. SS begins to catch ball, but LF knocks him over and ball pops out--having never been caught. Ball was in fair territory.

Ball squirts out toward no-man's land near stands in foul area. Both players are dazed and make no attempt to get to ball. Fleet-footed hitter runs all the way around bases.

What is it?
--E6/4-base error.
--Inside the park HR.
--Single with 3-base error.

I've seen no reference to collisions in rule book, although we could make a case for 2 OFs collided and awarded a hit in different scenario.

Should the SS get an error since he was sideswiped by teammate? Is an HR appropirate for opposing pitcher when the ball was misplayed and went 125 feet?

I won't say what I ruled as official scorer, but please reply with reasons.

Thanks!

-Bob

OBR 10.05 NOTE: A hit shall be scored if the fielder attempting to handle the ball cannot make a play, even if such fielder deflects the ball from or cuts off another fielder who could have put out a runner.

There was (and may still be; I haven't checked in a while) a site devoted to scoring questions.

The url was something like http://www.baseballscorecard.com

You might try there.
