Heck you could even carry on the bases with you, just in case your partner loses his and also to show everyone that as a base umpire, you can look professional to.

johnnyg08 Tue Feb 24, 2009 05:57pm

hassle free!

You arrive at the ballpark ready to enjoy a great day working the bases and as you pull up next to your partners car, there he is all dressed to work he plate and dangling off hip you see one of these! I'm mean what do you say to him?????

Disagree. Umpiring naked would be new, but also an extremely bad idea.

briancurtin Tue Feb 24, 2009 07:24pm

Thankfully no one I work with would ever use this item.

jdmara Tue Feb 24, 2009 07:29pm

Anybody want one? I'm going to order two  Or I could go to Lowes and go get a package of shower curtain hooks :D

johnnyg08 Tue Feb 24, 2009 07:29pm

There was a similar product a couple of years back. The difference, as I recall, was the other one was rigid and unfolded for use. When you were done you could simply snap it back into its locked position.

Seriously, after a HS playoff series last year, the guy who "invented" this approached our crew and asked who the crew chief was. When I answered that I was the crew chief, he handed me one of these, along with his business card. Not wanting to be rude, I accepted it, but I have not used it, nor would I ever.

I believe the ball bag would cover the hook.

Hang it on the toilet wall/door. Might come in handy in there.

If I was found possessing an Umpire Clip, I would have a cover story ready too. :D

I think I'll figure out a way to hang a Gatorade off one of those. I'll have one on each side, just in case we have extra innings.
Blue. Blue Gatorade. To match my shirt.
I should get some big games if coaches & my assignor sees me wearing Blue Gatorade like pistols. :p

johnnyg08 Wed Feb 25, 2009 01:47pm

they have those water belts for runners...there will be a photo of a dude sporting a water bottle or two from his hip. that would be awesome.

Hat rack

When I was playing baseball in HS (30+ years ago), I was a catcher and had begun umpiring little league by then. So I used to pay closer attention to the umpires than my team mates.

One of the slobs showed up (you can't make this stuff up) one day for the game, with his faded black windbreaker (too cheap to buy a plate coat...and way before pullovers had come into play), and pulled his really-badly-faded-from-the-rain beanie style hat out of his ball bag.

To top it all off....the balloon protector that was (of course) faded, and showed the ribs in it where he had put too much air in it. Navy (kind of) blue to match (not) his faded black windbreaker.

Let's just say that his first impression didn't enthrall anyone.

Back to the belt clip. May need to stock up on blue gatorade, red, light blue....all can match the shirt....but you guys will have a problem finding it in black.

Does it look bad to tuck the throat guard in the back of your pants and let the mask hang? Not during the game but before when inspecting field and equipment and during coaches meeting.

Umpires (well, those pretending to be umpires) have been known to do that.

This thread has spurred me to use my imagination and come up with the next great umpiring invention.
I think I've finally got it. Why not use fanny packs? Ball bags on the side... THE UMP PURSE in the back. Oh, Yeah... I'm going to be rich!

Think of how handy this would be. I'm going to hire that guy that yells about the cleaning supplies - Billy Mays - to do my TV commercial at 2 AM.

Car keys, no problem!
Afraid of a stolen wallet? Keep it in THE UMP PURSE!
Keep your sun screen in THE UMP PURSE!
1 million uses! Be the first on your diamond to have one!
Not seen in stores! Tell 'em Billy told you to call!!!!!

johnnyg08 Fri Feb 27, 2009 12:56pm

People laughed at the Wright Brothers too...and they brought us that song "Unchained Melody" life hasn't been the same since!!

tballump Sat Feb 28, 2009 03:20am

Can you spell Smitty.

Since when do umpires wear the hook. I thought umpires give them the hook.

Buddy, there's a new king of the but-if-you-order-right-now industry: Pete from Sham-Wow. He's even hawking these little easy-to-clean mini-choppers. He can annoy potential money burners even more than Billy Mays.
