Honig's Red Shirts
The red shirts at Honig's appear from the picture to be a bit more of a scarlet or a maroon than just a straightforward red. Is the colour they sell the correct colour? Because the picture of the Smitty's red shirt looks a lot more like a red.
Which one is correct? |

The industry standard red umpire shirt looks pretty good ... on the golf course.

Oh come on. Somebody here has to know red. You either love it or you hate it. There have to be a few non-haters here.

In American Legion they can wear red...I thought how gay a red shirt?.... well I bought one, have not wore it yet, will I? probably. Also I started out umpiring in Adult Softball for USSSA who only wears Red. I thin it's not a bad color, maybe the reason no one likes it cause it is never worn. I bet if MLB umpires started to wear Red alot of Umpires would switch...LOL
|
Umpmazza...they did wear it for a bit.

I LOVE RED SHIRTS. I have many and wear to all kinds of sporting events; T shirts, polos, long sleeve, sweats, hoodies and a couple of jackets.
I would not umpire a baseball game with one on though. Never have, don't see it happening. |
worked an adult amatuer town team all star tournament last 4th of July, three man crew, one Red, one White and one Blue. We got lots of compliments...on how we looked AND how we worked the game.

unhhhh...
I can't believe I'm gonna do this.
It's scarlet, bright. Haven't worn it in....seems like two years. THERE! It's OUT! |
I finally found a picture of the shade of red I think should only be sold:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...ayphotohosting I think it looks quite neat. Too bad nobody else wears them. |

What in hell is that navy shirt with the shoulder gussets all about? Anybody else ever seen those? And would you buy a shirt from a guy that looks like he's going to have an outburst? |
That same guy has been selling those navy w/stripes shirts on eBay for about five years now. He's located up in the Great White North, so maybe it's a Canadian thing. I have never seen one down here in The States.
Personally, I don't think they look that bad- at least compared to some of the other oddball color combinations out there. As for red shirts, I have one that I bought used on eBay for ten bucks a few years ago. We have some guys that I work summer leagues with that think red is uber-cool and, if they want to wear red, I got red. Mine's a good old +POS and when I say "red", this baby is, like, fire engine red! As a shirt color, I could take it or leave it. They look okay- at least, they don't instill in me the same revulsion that they seem to in others. Another eBay find was a brand-new, still in the wrapper, genuine baby blue Elbeco. Dropped five bucks on that one and break it out once or twice a year for league games if the weather's not too warm. The Elbeco's were really before my time- and I'm glad of that! Ironing those suckers is a pain! |
I do everything I possibly can to avoid wearing H.S. powder blue ... except wearing red.
|
I just LOVE the red shirt !!!!
I wish they would change our association's bylaws to allow us to mauve, puce, teal, and magenta. |

The HS group here allows for any color to be worn as long as both partners match. I only carry two colors, Black and Powder, and I always wear Black on the plate. The way I see it is, Hot is Hot! What is a couple of degrees?
If a partner contacts me and wants to wear a different color, then I'll bring it, but there are too many colors to pick from and I don't work enough HS games to warrant carrying more than 5 shirts in my bag. Long sleeve black plate, short sleeve black and powder plate, and short sleeve black and powder base. I should probably just take the powder plate one out of the bag. :) |

Am I the only one that's deeply disturbed by this image. I'm not talking about the shirts here guys. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it's just WRONG. |
I work a tournament during the summer on 4th of July weekend, and on all the games of the 4th of July we wear red white and blue, seeing as we run a 3 man crew... looks pretty sharp IMO, and have been told it looks pretty good... of course i take it to other tournaments, because it doesnt hurt to switch up the colors every once in a red moon :D

Honigs sells a bunch of different colors. True. But, the point should be....do you as the PU or UIC match your partner? If yes...than wear what ever color you want. I made a post on a different blog here about wearing Hawaiian shirts and even bringing out the balloon protector for a JC game. It worked...we matched and the game went off without a hitch. It's who's wearing the shirt, not the color of the shirt. Nuff' said!!!

And why is Barack Obama's picture on the barracks wall? Is this the new Guantanamo Bay relocation site? |
|
I'm sort of curious as to why the PU in that picture has red, but the rest of the crew has the navy blue shirts.
Personally, I don't think red looks that bad, especially with heather gray pants. I don't own one though, I just stick to the navy and powder blue. |
You get the impression that the umpire in red came to the game on the short bus.

The PU wearing red with the BU's in navy is something that the American League umpires used to do. This was not long after the AL and NL umps went to the pullovers from the Elbecos.

I believe Rob explained MLB concerns over the site, and he fully agreed with their concerns (even though he was going to see if he could work out a compromise and keep the site up), and then shutdown. It has been mentioned, that ever since MLB discovered Rob's website, his evaluations have slowly eroded. Coincidence(?), or are they just really looking over their evaluations extra carefully in anticipation of some possible openings due to injuries (Larry Poncino) and retirements when the new contract is signed in 2010. It would be a shame if, Guccione, Drake, and Hoye who have all worked close to 1000 games( 7 years worth of full time employment) or more did not make it, but there were never any guarantees anyway (just ask Tom Lepperd). Hopefully, they just spent their expense money and put every dime from the game fees in the bank for the last 7 years in case they are not hired. And while I'm on the topic, another contract will have to be negotiated for the AMLU after 2011. I would hope the College and High School umpires will not cross the lines this time if the AMLU decides they have to go on strike. If any amateurs want to see if they can umpire in Pro ball there is the Jim Evan's school and Harry Wendelstedt's school to go and try. Everyone has the same opportunity to try and get into the Pro game if they are good enough and maybe?? the WUA. Just because someone did not take the opportunity to try, is not a good reason to go and get involved in the MiLB disagreements between the umpires and management IMHO. Besides, all the player's and coaches are usually under "gag order" from the office not to make any negative comments on the field or to the press concerning the "replacement or fill-in umpires". This also puts a tremendous strain on the regular amateur "assignors" and the leagues and schools they cover when umpires bolt for the MiLB just to try and prove they can call a "Pro" game. Let's just say you can do the job. Big deal (that don't impress me much). Then get down to the schools and sign up. It looks like a full time "A" umpire can make about $10,000 for 140 games. That is $71 a game, and from post's on this board there are HS umpires in several areas making this amount of money. These AMLU guys are pro's, yet they are making less. Even the AAA guys are only making $107 per game. The D1 Colleges pay $200. So, to just try and prove you "could call at the pro level" does not make sense to me. Remember a coaches "good game" under a "gag order" holds no weight whatsoever and even if it did, big deal. There is a right way (go to the umpire school and make it and then start your quest) or the wrong way, by jumping into and interfering in someone else's business. JMHO (from reading this forum and articles on the internet) to all of this post. Maybe all the "red color" stuff started with the old AL maroon colors years ago. |
