Gear alert: GD [Wilson] has a new CP!

And he has some leg guards to match. Here they are:

And they're all quite reasonably priced:

And the matching HSM...

:D

I know, I know, another Darth Vader/Batman-ish design. But they seem to look like they give pretty good protection for the money, and you must admit that they look a helluva lot better than the old stuff:

Pretty Effin Funny, Hooowaa?

To steal a line from Blackhawk Down. I showed the new gear post and the follow-up HSM post to go with the gear to a baseball player in my class. He laughed louder than I did.

I don't care who you are, now that's funny. (my apologies to Larry the Cable Guy).

I would like to see the CP and Shins in person. Maybe the Davis Reps will have some at the NCAA clinics.

Pensaump Tue Dec 02, 2008 12:49pm

I saw these a couple days ago. The chest protector sounds like it could be pretty comfortable. I like all the adjustments it has on it. I will probably bite and try one. I too am willing to bet they will be at the NCAA clinics

Kevin Finnerty Tue Dec 02, 2008 01:00pm

The one you made is way better, Pen, which sampling this vest will only confirm.

kylejt Tue Dec 02, 2008 01:12pm

I'm now redlining my list to Santa, and putting my platinum on eBay. Finally an ergonomicly designed cp.

johnnyg08 Tue Dec 02, 2008 03:40pm

I'll be anxious to hear about the early reviews from the NCAA guys who start in the next couple of months. Are there any southern states that have HS ball going on right now or in the next month or two? If so, they'll have some input as well. Looks sharp!

Well, I'm interested in how it fits and covers, but I am not going as far as putting my Platinum on Ebay.

I agree, but who can tell besides you and your partner? (unless you wear the gear outside your clothes.;))

johnnyg08 Tue Dec 02, 2008 06:43pm

you don't wear your's on the outside?

Kevin Finnerty Tue Dec 02, 2008 07:32pm

Yeah!

Here's a picture of me from a couple years ago. But I got too much heat and got a Platinum.

jkumpire Tue Dec 02, 2008 10:12pm

I am somewhat impressed with the thought the GD boys put into these items. But, I will never wear anything else but my Carlucci, and 17" shin guards are not long enough for me.

I look forward to the evaluations on the gear.

As an aside, I will be at the Chicago NCAA meeting next year. This is the 1st one I have ever been to. Do they have a lot of people selling gear at these meetings? What are these meetings like?

And as we get close to the gathering, let's see if some of us could meet sometime and break bread together, or drink beverages of our choice...

Do you have this one for sale, since you have moved up to something "better"? I like the way this one looks....

JJ

Oh, and are those the keys to the batters box in his right hand?

Looks like you have let the air out of the balloon and have your keys in hand. Everyone should know the strikezone is now(or was) nose to toes and dugout to dugout.

That shot of MLB umpire Bill Summers appeared in a 1959 issue of Life Magazine. I've seen an enlargement of the photo - those are not keys in his right hand, it's a brush.

yep, looking at it again it is for sure a brush...although I liked the keys line better.

I've seen it up close. It appears to be a CP designed for fat amateur umpires looking to save a buck. The protection does not match up with the Gold, Carlucci, Douglas or most other hard shells. I'd be surprised to see any pro with more than a year's experience using it.

UMP25 Tue Dec 16, 2008 06:47pm

Time will tell, I guess.

SanDiegoSteve Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:27pm

I like the new gear, myself...at least the concept and the look. Can't tell how well it protects by that.

What I really like are the new Reebok plate shoes, since they feature steel toes, and the all-black NB base shoes. About time on those.

UMP25 Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:33pm

I'm curious to know why guys are so gung-ho to want all black base shoes but have no problem in wearing plate shoes that have plenty of white on them. Personally, I don't have a preference either way, although I admit that I'd prefer my plate shoes be closer to all black than my base shoes.

So is the putdown in your post "fat" or "amateur"?

They have been around for several years.

And thus the old saying, to each their own. You say potato, I say spud.

The "putdown" is the CP. Thought that was obvious. By it's design it will fit the chubbies better than other hard shells and its level of protection is best suited for amateur ball rather than professional.

Thus my original post.

Kevin Finnerty Thu Dec 18, 2008 01:06pm

Most of us have an inclusive attitude, others cut and dry everything and classify everyone. Free country. It's all good.

My HS association calls for all black shoes.........My other leagues and levels not so much......its seem we can get away with a minimum of white in HS (+pos on my plate shoes for instance)...but not on base shoes....

UMP25 Thu Dec 18, 2008 02:46pm

Again, either is fine with me. I was simply curious why someone might demand that their base shoes be all black but they don't say a word about their plate shoes having lots of white. Personally, if my shoes were to have white on them, I'd prefer it'd be my base shoes.
