Batter foul tips strike two catcher catches it throws to third catches r1 daydreaming. Is r1 out and can r2 advance from first to second

Why Not?

spillguy Wed May 15, 2002 06:34pm

caught foul tip is a live ball. had an umpire the other night at my sons LL minor game that called every foul to the screen a "foul tip". Bad mechanic.

brandda Wed May 15, 2002 07:48pm

yes and yes. A foul tip is a live ball.

jim1976 Thu May 16, 2002 09:34am

please clarify, is EVERY foul tip supposed to be live? Or just caught foul tips?

And if the foul tip is caught does the runner need to tag up before advancing to the next base?

Thanks

brandda Thu May 16, 2002 09:40am

If it's not caught it's not a foul tip, it's a foul ball. A foul tip is a live ball, no tag up required. Treat it identically to a swinging strike.

Rule Book

Go to a rulke book and read the definitions of Foul Tip and Foul BAll. This is another of the baseball myths.

jim1976 Thu May 16, 2002 10:01am

So if it's popped way up in foul territory and caught, the runners can advance without tagging up?

I'd have never guessed that.

Marty Rogers Thu May 16, 2002 10:32am

If it's popped way up in foul territory
and caught, it is NOT a foul tip. Of course
runner has to tag up. Read the definition, as
suggested to you before. It has to be SHARP
and DIRECT to the catcher's hands and legally
caught.

TV broadcasters are always calling sharp
foul balls FOUL TIPS. It drives me nuts.

Where can I find a good rule book? Preferably online.

Someone is assessing a "minor" Little League baseball umpire and saying he has bad mechanics? NO KIDDING! He is probably a volunteer at that level.

I seen this T-ball umpire who was wearing his hat backwards! He had a bad dress code. I should call his................

turn yer hat around and stop lookin' in mirror.

Why wouldn't you assess an umpire in an effort to improve? I am a volunteer umpire and expect to be assesed by UIC, and other senior umpires that I may work with. Hope someone would let me know what I am doing wrong or how to improve.
