I'm a beginning umpire and am confused with what type of gear and size that I would need. I'm 6'2" and currently 240lbs., I'm a pretty big guy. I've played the game since I was 4 and am currently 21, so I know the rules but I don't know what to buy and what is a good deal. Please Help!

Gerry Davis Sports all the way. 1-800-916-9088. They carry the sizes you need and understand what umpires want.

IMO, I like Honig's and most everyone in my assn uses Honig's. Some of the guys that do use Gerry Davis, look like walking billboards, HUGE logos, etc. I don't like that and think it draws attention. In defense of GD, they do carry some equipment that is logo free and their new hockey style equipment looks like it would be a great investment.

What stuff do your guys use with HUGE logos? Outside of the old plate shoes with DAVIS on heel area, everything has the same logo as everyone else uses. Hey, they all have their logos on the stuff they sell, when you see someone work and like the gear, you want to know who to call.

First, you should do some research on what equipment you like to purchase. If you go to the discussion board at http://www.umpire.org, there is a whole section devoted to equipment. Umpires are glad to share their experiences about equipment and suppliers.

As for the supplier, you can not go wrong with the name guys - Honigs or Gerry Davis. If you buying a particular item (i.e. West Vest), it is likely you find a better deal at some lesser known suppliers.

Finally, as a satisified owner of the Gerry Davis plate shoe, simple nail polish removed the logo.

Your about the same height and weight as me. (Mabey a little lighter!!!)

Anyway I found a good ALL STAR vest about 7 yrs ago and its great. Its lightweight and does'nt feel like you wearing a suit of armor. It does'nt cost over $100 because some pro ump signed it and it takes a licking and still keeps you ticking.

I paid $60ea and bought 2 of them, then, and Im still using them now.

Unless your gonna do pro ball right away these have worked great. You dont sweat like a pig in the summer and the vest does'nt retain perspiriation because it is a foam with netting. I have officiated games from LL through College and a couple of Semi-pro teams and have been ding several times , but never serious. There is good shoulder an neck protection.

Im not sure if they still sell them, but my point is, there is a lot of equipment out there for sale. Shop around. Just dont buy it because everyone else does.

I thought only coaches were allowed to use that line.
