Is MLB evaluating possible 2009 crew assignments already?

Recent crew assignment changes (for games of Sunday 7/13/08):

SF @ CHI - McClelland crew - Beal for Vanover
FLA @ LAD - Scott crew - Campos for Kulpa
CWS @ TEX - Tschida crew - Johnson for Carlson
SEA @ KC - Darling crew - Tichenor for Darling
COL @ NYM - T. Welke crew - Cousins for T. Welke; Hudson for AAA/Poncino
STL @ PIT - Cousins crew - Fairchild for Cousins
ARI @ PHI - Davis crew - Cuzzi for Holbrook
NYY @ TOR - Cederstrom crew - full strength :)
CIN @ MIL - Reilly crew - full strength :)
LAA @ OAK - West crew - Guccione for Rapuano
MIN @ DET - Montague crew - Kulpa for Cuzzi
OFF - Marsh crew - Crew vacation (7/7/08-7/13/08)
OFF - Crawford crew - Crew vacation (7/7/08-7/13/08)
ATL @ SDP - Reed crew - Drake for Wegner; Runge for Randazzo; Knight for Reed
BAL @ BOS - DeMuth crew - full strength :)
HOU @ WAS - Reliford crew - Causey for Gibson; Holbrook for Runge; Barry for Danley
TBR @ CLE - Hirschbeck crew - Danley for Hirschbeck

In effect, when all is said and done:

Beal for Vanover
Campos for Randazzo
Johnson for Carlson
Tichenor for Darling
Fairchild for T. Welke
Hudson for AAA/Poncino
Guccione for Rapuano
Drake for Wegner
Knight for Reed
Causey for Gibson
Barry for Hirschbeck

That's 4 out of 15 crew chiefs out for one reason or another, plus another 2 on crew vacation, making a total of 6 out of 17.

What's the big idea here?

I think they try and move people closer to home before the all star break so they don't have to travel as far.

But seriously....try coin collecting or something

In the long run it doesn't matter who gets moved to what crew. I'd rather go back to talking about A-Rod.

Exactly. What IS the big deal?

We need to know when each umpire goes on vacation....and where they go....and with who....and for how long....and....

And if it's not too much trouble, maybe you can track their bowel movements for us too....both #1 and #2.

Inquiring minds need to know!

Wanna know what a Major League umpire has for breakfast?

Why, I have bacon and eggs, hash browns and juice.:)

 I find it rather odd that you even know this stuff. "Odd" may be a bit kind too.

I'm with Kyle, isn't this stuff rather proprietary?

if you simply MUST know what is going on, it is likey a combination of vacation time and all of the injuries that have occurred up there this year. ALL of the guys you listed in the left colum, save for marvin, are AAA guys that are up filling in, so that has absoultely zero to do with assignments for next year. they have probably been swapping full time guys around to try and have as few crews as possible that have 2 AAA guys on the field at the same time, though that has been the case on multiple occasions this year.
