LL rule question

Guys - I came over from the basketball board to ask a Little League rules question. I drove about 100 miles round trip this morning to watch my grandson play in a Junior League All-Star game. In the third inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd, they were off with the pitch. The pitcher threw a wild pitch that hit behind the plate and bounced up over the screen out of play. The umpire directed the runners to 2nd and 3rd. The visiting coach came out and asked (very politely, I might add) if the runners get the base they were going toward plus one. The umpire told him no. Is this the correct call? It didn't have a bearing on the game, since my grandson's team won by eight (he hit a grand slam in the fifth) but I just wondered about it.

Thanks.

The award is one base from the time of the pitch. So, at the time of the pitch the runners were on 1st & 2nd, the award would be 2nd & 3rd as the umpire did. The fact the the runners were off with the pitch means nothing.

There may be 1 + 1 in basketball, but there is no 1 + 1 in baseball. The proper award in your situation is one base from the time of pitch. The umpire was correct in awarding the runners second and third.

Similar to what Delaware Blue and ozzy said:
Rule of Thumb - One from the mound and two from the field.

Thank you everybody. Is the rule the same at higher levels?

Same in all codes and all levels.

The only time it would be different is if the pitcher stepped off the rubber before throwing.

Yes, because if he steps off the rubber he becomes an infielder, and the award is two bases from the time of the throw.

Unless it's the first play on a batted ball...

Don't you love baseball rules? :D
