Squeeze Play Problems

During a discussion of squeeze and suicide squeeze plays, a question came up that I have never run into. I would expect this in softball but not in baseball but here goes:

OBR, 1 out, R3 with a huge lead, RHB in the box. (Let's go with FED also)

F2 calls for the pitch out as R3 takes off. F1 delivers and B1 throws his bat at the pitch! Bat contacts the ball, R3 dives and tags the plate. What do we have?

If fair, score the run and play on; otherwise, foul ball.

Where did the batted ball go? Fair, Foul, over the fence? The last time I checked the rules, a Pitch out is a legal pitch with a few caveats (catcher begins behind the plate, batter doesn't step out of box to contact pitch or step on plate when contacting pitch, ect).

As for the batter throwing bat at pitch, are you sure he thew the bat or did it just slip from his hands?

I couldn't see applying 6.06c in this situation. The batter is doing what he's supposed to be doing - protecting the runner on a sqeeze play, the defense is doing what their supposed to be doing attemping a play on R3.

Play on, and determine where the ball is hit.

As previously discussed, no rule against throwing the bat. Hitters throw the bat at the pitch on hit and runs and squeezes all the time. If fair, it's fair. If foul, it's foul.

BTW, this wouldn't have happened in softball. No leadoffs or suicide squeezes in softball.

Thanks, guys. Had a serious brain failure on this one. For some reason, I thought that throwing the ball at the bat was not allowed in baseball. I don't know why I thought this!

Suicide squeeze plays can happen during a Fastpitch game. The runner at third must wait until the ball is released by F1 before advancing.

I assume you meant throwing the bat at the ball, and it is illegal if the ball has already been hit one time.
