TV show slur

Hi guys. I came over from the basketball forum again to ask this of you. I was watching an old "Password Plus" on Game Show Network and one of the puzzles had as it's answer - "Umpire". One of the clues was the word "blind". Now I haven't officiated a baseball game since I was a teenager (about two centuries ago) but it offended me a little. Do you guys, who actually are umpires, take offense when you hear someone make this kind of statement. I realize it was just an old game show, but does something like this matter to you?

TussAgee11 Sun Jun 01, 2008 05:05pm

I've always thought it would be funny when umpiring 2 teams I've never done before to have a dog lead me onto the field and wear big old person sunglasses...

No, it doesn't offend me. Everyone wants their team to win. When a decision we make affects that team's ability to win, it seems only natural that some people would get upset.

But I know I got the call right, so really, I don't care about anybody else. You just can't in this business. I'm not there to please them, so they shouldn't be there to please me.

kylejt Sun Jun 01, 2008 06:27pm

I've come on the field with one of those fold-up white canes and dark sunglasses, and ask where the plate was. Always good for a larf.

I don't care if you call me stupid, blind, ugly, etc. Just don't question my integrity. Parentage maybe, but not my honesty.

I honestly could never officiate a basketball game after watching a dozens of HS tilts. I'd eject most coaches within the first minute of most games I've seen. Once the "YOU....!" is dropped, it's shower time for someone. Plus they yell right in your ear. They'll stand right next to you, and unload. Hats off to you for putting up with it( I guess ), I never could/would.

So who says I put up with it? Just ask the other guys on the basketball board about my attitude regarding coaches. Note my signature below.;)

I would love to answer your quesiton but I can't read it because I am blind in one eye and can't see out of the other, :D .

Mark, you do realize that the fans think basketball refs are all blind too, don't you? It's not exclusive to baseball umpires.

Rita C Sun Jun 01, 2008 08:22pm

Sometimes after a play is over during an at bat, I'm asked the count. I tell them I don't know till I get it in my hand since it's in Braille.

Actually Steve fans consider basketball officials cheaters more than blind. ;)

Peace

I have always wanted to go to the plate meeting wearing those fake glasses that are thick as the bottoms of Coke bottles. Then when handed the line-ups take them off and say, "I don't need these for reading, just distance"....

:D Very funny line!

I've got a pair that I bring with me to the first weekend of the minor football season. I will put them on when I see a new coach, and welcome him to the fold. :)

When I was in college (that was back when we still had a center jump after each field goal that was scored) I officiated the men's intramural championship game. I walked out to center court wearing dark sunglasses and used a white pole whose one end had been painted bright reflective orage (it was one of those poles that are used to mark the edges of sidewalks so the campus groundskeepers could plow the sidewalks). Everybody but the team the eventually lost the game did not appreciate my humor. Even the head of intramurals thought it was funny and very apprapo (boy I hope I spelled the silly French work correctly).

During the plate conference when the home team's manager gives you his lineup card, hold it as far away as possible while reviewing it. When the visiting team's manager gives you his line up card review it while holding very close to your nose. The eye contact the two manager make with your partner(s) is priceless.

Missed it, and you also slipped on the little English word. :)

Sorry guys, just visiting, I'll head back to the hoops side now.

I don't mind if ya stick around, Snaqs. We can always use another good umpire in baseball. ;)

Adam Tue Jun 03, 2008 04:20pm

Thanks. It's all I can do to get my wife to not complain too much about basketball season. Now that I'm commuting 2 1/2 hours a day, that may get harder this year. :)

Years ago I officiated women's college basketball in a NAIA conference in Indiana. The name of of the college is not important but I officiated one of the first college games played in their new facility, which had been just opened and had been built per the new handicapped accessable rules that had just had become federal law and the officials dressing rooms were labled in both English and Braile. I thought it was very funny and asked the A.D. if she was trying to tell my partner and me something.

Yeesh, that's rough. I put in a good hour and a half commuting and I'm fortunate enough to have an understanding wife. I do make sure we have our time but we'll see what happens later on considering we are still newlyweds. I don't think I can pull off trying to work basketball this season as well, that might be a bit too much. The extra cash definitely helps though. ;)

Where I'm from, drive-through ATMs have Braille on the buttons. Makes you wonder. . .

Indeed. I would have pointed it out, but I would have had to figure out how to do that 'a' with the accent thingy.

Yes, I know it's called an accent grave.

Accent grave? Why, is French going the way of Latin?

Go open up your Word program. Go to Insert>Symbol. Pick symbol out of symbol chart. Double click it. Select it on the page by dragging over it w/mouse. Control + C to copy. Come back into forum. Control + V to paste. Voilà. It’s like déjà vu all over again.

Another trick if you're using Windows is to go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. This has a list of all sorts of characters, including the a with grave. You can either copy it and paste it into a post or you can type in the number combination and it will appear in your text box.

For example: The key sequence for a with grave is ALT+0224. The numbers are keyed in with your number pad, which is the block of numbers to the right of your keyboard. For à, you would hold down ALT and press 0224 on the number pad and then release ALT.

JR, probably something like SunOS.

mbyron, I assume you're a Mac user? Don't feel guilty about it, there's nothing wrong with that. :D I am impressed with their user interface and the fact the OS is now Unix based is nice but they just aren't my cup of tea.

I have used Steve's copy-and-paste method before, but I'm usually too lazy to do it. So I've been meaning to learn shortcuts.

As it happens, the Windows character map is nothing more than the standard ASCII character map in 4 digits. I have a cheat-cheat of ASCII characters that I already use for CADD work, so I'll have to try ít ôút. It workß ok, but there must be something simpler.

I've occasionally inserted accented characters through some accidental combination of ctrl alt characters, but I haven't experimented with finding out what they are. That might have been a Word function, though. . .

If they didn't have them, it would make me wonder why they needed to make two different sets (one for walk-up ATMs and one for drive-up ATMs), especially when they don't know where the keypad is going when it's manufactured.
