Home Plate ump forget his long sleeves?

Twins/White Sox...I've never seen this at the MLB level before...long sleeves worn under a short sleeve shirt. Is that acceptable in any set?

briancurtin Tue May 06, 2008 09:43pm

i would never do it, but ive seen it many a time

i believe larry young's picture on MLB.com used to be of him working the plate in a short sleeve shirt with underarmor

tjones1 Tue May 06, 2008 10:43pm

I haven't seen the highlights yet. But, Dana's number is 32.

eagle_12 Tue May 06, 2008 11:45pm

I've seen it before in the bigs. All personal preference I do believe.

canadaump6 Tue May 06, 2008 11:49pm

Is it bad attire to wear a long sleeved shirt under the umpiring shirt? I've done this many times before and never been told it was a bad idea.

[email protected] Tue May 06, 2008 11:57pm

In the early part of the season, I do it all the time. I have enough invested in shirts and if I started buying long-sleeved shirts, I might have to look for a new wife. Not worth it. See it done by many oficials around here. If it happens that I get a case of the stupids and get sunburned, I might even wear the long-sleeved undershirt in July to protect from more injury.

Like most "fashion" items, it depends on the area. The saying, "Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have" applies here. If the umpires at "the next level" (whatever that means for you) wear this, then it's okay for you to wear it. If not, then don't.

Personally, I think that if it's cold enough to wear a long-sleeved undershirt, that you should wear either a long-sleeved over shirt or a jacket.

Agreed. In my association, we do not allow long sleeve undershirts with a short sleeve shirt. We do allow the long sleeve shirts to be worn at the discretion of the crew. Personally, I do not own a long sleeve shirt. I use a plate coat and on the bases I use a jacket if I am cold.

johnnyg08 Wed May 07, 2008 08:06am

sounds like it's different everywhere in the country...i guess the takeaway here is do what your association says...

bossman72 Wed May 07, 2008 09:23am

Question:

Should we treat long sleeve shirts the same as jackets in regard to your partner wearing one? So If I want to wear a long sleeve, can my partner wear a short sleeve and be ok?

IMO -- all base umpires must be the same, the plate umpire can be different.

UMP25 Wed May 07, 2008 09:59am

Agreed, Bob. Of course, in a 2-man crew it always looks a bit odd, but I guess as long as I look like myself on the bases, I'll be OK. :D

that's the way that I've always been taught and the way that we've done it in our local groups.

Thanks
David

Agreed. I've never had a problem with a partner wearing long sleeves or a jacket while I'm behind the plate in short sleeves. But If there is more than one BU they should be uniform.

Also, my association recently sent out an email saying that long sleeve shirts are not to be worn under your short sleeve shirt.

if the plate guy wears long sleeves base guy wears a jacket

what bob said is correct, bases match and plate guy does as he pleases within reason

I disagree with that. I have no problem with base umpires wearing long sleeves. And I do not know of any provision where I live that has such provisions in the first place.

Now before the long sleeves were made it was common to wear a long sleeve shirt underneath the current pull over style. No one had a problem as long as the sleeves underneath were the same color of the shirt. At that time it was not hard because there was really only one shirt we wore at that time.

Peace

I have not only seen it, but also I have done it.:D

I would not, however, where a long-sleeved undershirt under a short-sleeved undershirt. De gustibus non est disputandum.

IceGator8 Wed May 07, 2008 01:19pm

I've seen UA stuff with short sleeve shirts on many occasions and do not have a problem with it.

I've known a few guys that wear ong sleeve UA type stuff in the heat of summer because they are having skin cancer issues. In fact I've considered this because on two occasion my doc has been concerned about spots on my arm. A well ventilated short sleeve short with some long sleeve UA Heat Gear is far cooler than a long sleeve umpire shirt in summer situations.

tjones1 Wed May 07, 2008 01:59pm

I've worn a long sleeve shirt on the bases. However, it was really cold and I was looking for layers. It was of course under my jacket, so the only one who knew was me. I've never seen just a long sleeve shirt being worn on the bases.

kylejt Wed May 07, 2008 02:33pm

Just because you don't see MLB umpire wearing long sleeved jerseys on the bases doesn't make bad. You won't catch me wearing those short sleeved smocks they wear.

If you guys don't have the long sleeved shirt from theofficialschoice.com, you're missing out. Niiiiiiiice. Base, plate, no matter. It's a very comfortable piece of gear when it's 55 to 65 degrees.

Long sleeved under armour under a short sleeved shirt just looks a bit tacky, like an after thought. Not a big deal, and if you're wearing to block the sun, God bless. Don't lose sleep over it.

I do not have a picture. And unless you can show me where you cannot wear this anywhere in writing then it can be done. As said this is a local issue that the standards might be set by the people you work for. Now considering that they make the long sleeve shirts they can be worn. I have never seen anywhere it is only restricted for plate use. And in a two man system, I really do not care what the base umpire wears as long as we are in the sprit of uniformity.

Peace

I've seen MWC and SWAC guys wear long sleeves on the bases. I always wondered why they didn't just throw on jackets.

kylejt Wed May 07, 2008 06:57pm

My most favorite piece of gear is a +POS lined long sleeved jersey. They didn't make them very long, but they're very warm. I'll wear them down to 50, where I'll switch to a jacket.

FTVMartin Wed May 07, 2008 08:29pm

I like to wear the long sleeve on the plate or bases if it is cool but not cold. I've heard the theory that they are only for plate but I've seen it on both here. Long sleeve undershirt looks silly. Last week I had a partner in a red UA with a navy shirt. (He resembled Superman a little bit) between games he said he forgot his jacket so I gave him one of mine.

canadaump6 Wed May 07, 2008 11:57pm

Thanks for the responses guys.

I wonder if Coach JM is going to add my statement that I wear a long sleeved shirt to his little list of canadaump6 quotes?

UmpJM Wed May 07, 2008 11:59pm

canadaump6,

No, I wouldn't do that.

I have seen this growing trend as well. Ironically, these umpires who wear long sleeved shirts under short sleeved shirts are still excellent umpires, go figure.

They may be excellent umpires, but dressed like power dorks they're going to have to work a little harder to prove it.

RPatrino Thu May 08, 2008 10:30am

While I might agree with you about how this looks, I'm not going to worry about it, because I mostly care about the quality of my partners work, as opposed to his look.

UMP25 Fri May 09, 2008 12:58am

You mean you don't want your partners to look FABULOUS?!? :D

thumpferee Fri May 09, 2008 08:54am

I always thought it looked tacky. I have the long sleeve and jacket and would normally wear either, but I gotta say, there was an in-between day and my partner and I decided to go short sleeves. Well I put on my navy blue long sleeve under armour and rolled the sleeves up.

In the 5th, got a lil' chilly, down came the sleeves. My COLD P and the catcher noticed and called me a cheater.lol
