Has Anyone Actually Received Their 2008 BRD?

I have been semi-patiently waiting and everyday I go to the mailbox and noooo, nothing from Officiating.com or Papa C. Just wondering if anyone else has actually received it.

I received it in the mail today.

Just received mine in this afternoon's mail. I had placed my order on Jan. 15th.

What the ......

I just got my mail. No BRD. I ordered before the end of the year or at very beginning of year. I wonder what's up.

Mine came today.

I will shut up. For now. It looks like a great read. Thanks to Papa C for this contribution to amateur umpiring. Now, if I could only find a Official Rules of Baseball Annotated by Jim Evans and if I would buy the Jaksa/Roder manual I would have a pretty good rules collection.

_Bruno_ Sat Feb 23, 2008 03:29pm

is there any kind of a reading rehearsal of the BRD to download ?

MajorDave Sat Feb 23, 2008 03:49pm

Bruno, Do you mean a sample? I don't know of one. Trust me. It is worth the price of joining Officiating.com plus you get access to the articles which are usually a good read and very helpful if for nothing else than to get you thinking about situations, rules, etc.

_Bruno_ Sat Feb 23, 2008 03:54pm

yes, i meant a sample. is this book like a manual with rule explanations like the J/R oder PBUC manual ?

UmpJM Sat Feb 23, 2008 05:55pm

MrUmpire,

My own perspective on the BRD is a little different. While it certainly does identify the differences that exist between OBR, NCAA, FED, and NAIA rules, to me its primary value is as the most comprehensive and current text covering official interpretations (and authoritative opinions) for EACH of those rule sets.

To me, the fact that it delineates the differences is of secondary value.

I would encourage anyone who officiates under ANY of the covered rule sets to obtain a copy.

But, we find value where we will. If the book assists your understanding, who's to argue?;)

Maybe Carl will consider changing the name to "Baseball Rules Interpretations and Differences." That would, of course, require a new acronym for the Internet umpiring community to use.............

Whatever you want to call it....

It is still a valuable resource. I happen to umpire in all three domains included in the book. I tab the pages with the key matters like pitching/balks, etc. and take a read on the can (my special porcelain coated library) on an almost daily basis but specifically on days I am calling something different than what I called the last time out. As Ump/Coach JM said it helps you learn and digest the rules. I have read the 2006 version at least 7 or 8 times all the way through over the last 2 years and I have read certain portions multiple times more than that. It helps me with my confidence and to date, knock on wood, no one has come back to me complaining that I "kicked a rule" as Papa C (esteemed author of the BRD) says. It is well worth your investment if you can read and care about your professionalism and truly want to be better and get better every day in the field of umpiring.

And for around $30 with shipping...it's a portion of 1 game fee...definitely worth the money for anybody who cares about improving their hobby.
