FED. Is there a specific rule that mandates a shagger to protect a pitcher/catcher warming up in the bullpen? I know if there IS a shagger he must wear a helmet, but is there a rule that says there must BE a shagger? Thanks.

JJ

There is nothing in the rule book or case book requiring a shagger.

Correct.....BUT....any possibility in a kid getting wacked by an errant ball that COULD have been prevented by an umpire is gonna look real bad when legal sits come up..........I think they call it negligence here in Ca.

True. But I can't recall working a ball game where the pitcher warmed up INSIDE the fence.

Saw one yesterday...... pretty common on a few of our fields. Kids are down one of the outfield foul areas(usually visitors). Just covering my ***.........:o)

I just had a thought (Wow, does my head hurt). Anytime a non-adult is in live ball territory, they are required to wear a helmet. Check 2001 Case Book: 1.1.5 SITUATION G. This ruling defines it.

Bob, I know it says in the rules that if there IS a shagger he MUST wear a helmet, but my original question asked if there was a rule that there had to be a shagger in the first place. Thanks for the input, though!

JJ as Bob said there is no specific rule regarding this. However, if you have safety concerns than you can invoke FED rule 10-2-3g

There is no rule that says there has to be a shagger but as long as they have a helmet on there is nothing wrong with is cause they could keep the person warming up from getting hurt.

That is my opinion.
