It's that time of year - everything's frozen but the space between our ears, where thoughts turn to spring, and baseball, of course.

Major league umpire Randy Marsh left town Wednesday to do some evaluating at the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Florida. Locally, the Northern Kentucky Baseball Umpires Association gears up for its Tuesday night rules clinic (7 p.m., Simon Kenton High).

It should come as no surprise the umpires are already hard at it. They have to be ready first; they're the ones who call, "Play ball!"
